Family in the Western world have changed greatly during the last two centuries. Social scientists say that this change in the family is one of the important changes from a traditional society to a modern society. Before the 19th century, families usually arranged marriages for their children. Young people did not decide who they wanted to marry. After they got married, they usually had a lot of children. In the 19th century, most yong people could choose the person they wanted to marry. A marriage joined two people, not two families. Two peple could get married because the loved each other, not just because their families wanted them to marry. At the same time, parents began to realize that they had to take very good care of their children. Before this, most people did not go to school. The family members all worked together at home. Later , peole realize that education was necessary for a good life. Today many parents think that they should have fewer children so they can give each one a good life. They think it is important for a mother and a father to spend as much time as possible with their childre n. They think parents should take care of their health and try to give them an education. Home is seen as a safe, warm place for all the family members. 1. When Doreen got her first jo b at an engineering company in England, she was to ld, “ Yo u’ll never earn a pro per salary because yo u are a wo man.” Do reen had a good degree in physics, but she wasn’t surprised. It seemed no rmal in those days t hat good jo bs in industry were o nly fo r men. But every t hing has cha nged. No w she is 54. Doreen is earning a very good salary, and she is st ill mo ving up in her career. The key to Doreen’s success is that she has never sto pped learning. She went back to school almost as soo n as she graduated, because she wanted to work in the new transistor industry. After several different jobs, she moved to an American Company called Texas Instrument. She has worked there since 1972, and now she is a principal eng ineer. Doreen said, “ People don’t know how to treat me !” If you are invited to someone’s house in America for dinner, you should bring a gift, such as a bunc h of flowers or a box of chocolates. If you give a host a wrapped gift, he may open it in front of you. Opening a present in front of the gift-giver is considered polite. It shows that the host is excited about receiving the gift and wants to show his appreciation to you immediately. Even if the host doesn’t like it, he will tell a “ white lie “ and say how much they like the gift to prevent the guest from felling bad. If your host asks you to arrive at a particular time, you should not arrive exactly on time or earlier than the expected time, because this is considered to be potentially inconvenient and therefore rude, as the host may not be ready. 27.What should you bring if you are invited to someone’s house in America for dinner? …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………………………………………………… 28.
