A THIEF IN THE BUS
Mr Smith gave his wife ten pounds for her birthday - ten pretty pound notes. So the day after her birthday, Mrs
Smith went shopping. She queued for a bus, got on, and sat down next to an old lady. After a while, she noticed
that the old lady's handbag was open. Inside it, she saw a wad of pound notes exactly like the ones her husband
had given her. So she quickly looked into her own bag- the notes had gone! Mrs Smith was sure that the old
lady, who was sitting next to her, had stolen them. She thought she would have to call the police; but, as she
disliked making a fuss and getting people into trouble, she decided to take back the money from the old lady's
handbag and say nothing more about it. She looked round the bus to make sure nobody was watching, then she
carefully put her hand into the old lady's bag, took the notes and put them in her own bag.
When she got home that evening, she showed her husband the beautiful hat she had bought.
"How did you pay for it?" he asked.
"With the money you gave me for my birthday, of course," she replied.

Dear Bac,
How are you? I am still working on the farm, but unfortunately I am going to leave here at the end of winter.
Let me tell you why.
We had a terrible time a month ago. Thousands of insects came and ate many of the crops in the fields. The
farmer is very worried because he thinks the insects will come again and destroy all the crops. He became so
worried that he sold the farm last week, and that is why I have to leave here.
Soon, I will have to look for another job. Do you think you could help me find one? I like working on farms, so
if you know anyone who needs a hard worker, please recommend me to them. I know that you are very busy at
the moment and that you don't have much free time. But I really hope you can find time to help me. I don't
know what else to do.

II. Read the following passages and answer the questions given below each passage.
Passage 1
How can we keep our teeth healthy? First we ought to visit our dentist twice a year. He can fill the small holes
in our teeth before they destroy the teeth. He can examine our teeth to check that they are growing in the right
way. Unfortunately, many people wait until they have toothache before they see a dentist. Secondly, we should
brush our teeth with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, once after breakfast and once
before we go to bed. We can also use wooden toothpicks to clean between our teeth after a meal. Thirdly, we
should eat food that is good for our teeth and our body: milk, cheese, fish, bread, potatoes, red rice, raw
vegetables and fresh fruit. Chocolate, sweets, biscuits, and cakes are bad, especially when we eat them between
meals. They are harmful because they stick to our teeth and cause decay.

Passage 2
Would you like a robot in your house? It is now generally accepted that in the future robots will take over many
of our tasks, especially jobs of repetitive nature. But it’s doubtful if robots will ever be able to do any of the
more creative types of work or indeed if people want them to. In the home robots probably used to do the
cleaning, table-laying curbing and washing up, but it’s considered unlike so far that they’ll be used to do the
cooking- at least not in a near future. Robots in the home might not be creative enough to do the cooking, plan
the meals, and so on.
They would be used as slaves, thereby freeing people to do more of the things they wanted.
21. What kind of jobs would a robot take over?

22. What are the types of creative jobs?

23. Can robots do creative work? Why?

The thing I like most about living on the farm is the change of seasons-spring, summer, autumn and winter.
You can see them all come and go and each one is completely different. In the city you can’t tell the different –
you can buy summer flowers in winter and eat the same vegetables all year round. Here in the country you only
eat things at certain time of year – for example, strawberries in June and turnips in winter. You live with
seasons.
Also we make most of our food.- we make butter and cheese, we grow our own vegetables and bake our own bread. We
never eat frozen and tinned food. Everything is fresh – so it must be better for you. City people may thing we miss a lot of
good things about modern life, but in my opinion they miss a lot than we do- they miss real life.
1. What does the author like most about living on a farm?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
2. What are the names of the four seasons?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
3. What does the author mean by “you live with seasons”?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
4. What kind of food do they make in the country?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
5. What are the two words in the passage to describe food that isn’t fresh?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Passage 2
Every country has its own customs. Customs are the ways in which things are usually done. For example, it is the custom
in America to shake hands and say “hello” when we meet someone. And in some other countries as in China, Japan and
Korea, people bow. We have customs with food, too. Girls visiting the United States found some of the food customs
there are very funny.
A girl from the Philippine Island thought the food in the United States was too cold – cold mild, cold juice, cold fruit,
cold Coca-cola, etc. A girl from Brazil thought it was strange that people in the United States eat so early at night. In
Brazil they usually eat dinner at about 10 o’clock. A girl from Sweden was surprised that she could buy many different
kinds of food in the restaurants. And if you go to the United States we are sure that you will find many other things which
are strange and interesting to you, too.
Customs help to make countries different, or it means that every country has it own customs and traditions. They make
our travel even more enjoyable.
1. What are customs?

2. What do people in America do when they meet each other?
