  • The ‘electronic book’ is a feature of this early 21st Century. I have been in academic life for several decades, and have I hope responded with flexibility to changes over that time. I have been using a word processor on a daily basis for twenty years and am deeply conscious of the advantages over even the most advanced typewriters. The first time I gave a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint was in India about six years ago. I have with enthusiasm used PowerPoint for every invited talk or conference contribution I have given since. Such talks and contributions have been in...

Nanoscale Research Letters 2011, 6:237 http://www.nanoscalereslett.com/content/6/1/237 NANO REVIEW Open Access Measurement of the extinction coefficients of magnetic fluids Xiaopeng Fang, Yimin Xuan*, Qiang Li Abstract A novel spectral transmittance approach for measuring the extinction coefficient of magnetic fluids is proposed. The measuring principle and accuracy of the approach are analysed. Experiments are conducted to measure the extinction coefficient of magnetic fluids with different particle volume fractions.

  • Cd1-xMnxS nanoparticles (NPs) with size quantum confinement belong to the diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) quantum dot (QD) class of materials that has been widely studied in the last few years. The study of quasi-zero-dimensional Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors (DMS), such as Cd1-xMnxS Quantum Dots (QDs), is strongly motivated due to the localization of magnetic ions in the same places as the free-like electron and hole carriers occurring in these nanomaterials [1,2].

  • In this article, we report on the preparation of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) by sol-gel method and their optical properties. The average size of QDs is also estimated by using various ways, such as the Scherer’s formula, The Effros-Brus-Kayanuma’s theoretical expression, TEM etc. The TEM images of samples show that the mean sizes of QDs are 4 nm. The mean sizes of QDs are smaller than that of other methods and arranging from 2 to 3.6 nm.

  • Fibre Optic Thermometers Properties of Optical Fibres Dielectric opticalfibre, which is also referred to as a light guide, is composed of a rod core surrounded by a sheath as shown in Figure 6.1 . The core, which conducts the electromagnetic wave, has a refractive index, nj , while the sheath, which contains the wave within the core, has a refractive index, n2 . To ensure that the wave is contained in the core it is necessary that the condition nj n2 is satisfied. The electromagnetic waves incident on the front part of the optical fibre, within the angle cone, 2a,...
