This very brief presentation of the claims of Anthropology for a recognized place in institutions of the higher education in the United States will, I hope, receive the thoughtful consideration of the officers and patrons of our Universities and PostGraduate Departments. The aim of this book is to teach computer programming using examples
from mathematics and the natural sciences. We have chosen to use
the Python programming language because it combines remarkable expressive
power with very clean, simple, and compact syntax. Python is
easy to learn and very well suited for an introduction to computer programming.
Python is also quite similar to Matlab and a good language
for doing mathematical computing. It is easy to combine Python with
compiled languages, like Fortran, C, and C++, which are widely used
languages for scientific computations.

In this paper we describe a new technique for parsing free text: a transformational grammar I is automatically learned that is capable of accurately parsing text into binary-branching syntactic trees with nonterminals unlabelled. The algorithm works by beginning in a very naive state of knowledge about phrase structure. By repeatedly comparing the results of bracketing in the current state to proper bracketing provided in the training corpus, the system learns a set of simple structural transformations that can be applied to reduce error.

drawing to a close, with victory about to perch on the banner of science,
as a perusal of almost any university or college catalogue shows. While a
limited knowledge of both Greek and Latin is important for the correct
use of our own language, the amount till recently required, in my judgment,
has been absurdly out of proportion to the intrinsic value of these
branches, or perhaps more correctly roots, of study.
We present LLCCM, a log-linear variant of the constituent context model (CCM) of grammar induction. LLCCM retains the simplicity of the original CCM but extends robustly to long sentences. On sentences of up to length 40, LLCCM outperforms CCM by 13.9% bracketing F1 and outperforms a right-branching baseline in regimes where CCM does not.
Various kinds of scored dependency graphs are proposed as packed shared data structures in combination with optimum dependency tree search algorithms. This paper classiﬁes the scored dependency graphs and discusses the speciﬁc features of the “Dependency Forest” (DF) which is the packed shared data structure adopted in the “Preference Dependency Grammar” (PDG), and proposes the “Graph Branch Algorithm” for computing the optimum dependency tree from a DF. The paper develops a constraint-based theory of prosodic phrasing and prominence, based on an HPSG framework, with an implementation in ALE. Prominence and juncture are represented by n-ary branching metrical trees. The general aim is to deﬁne prosodic structures recursively, in parallel with the deﬁnition of syntactic structures. We address a number of prima facie problems arising from the discrepancy between syntactic and prosodic structure .
