Virtually every branch of the sciences, engineering, economics, and related fields now discusses or refers to
chaos. James Gleick's 1987 book, Chaos: making a new science and a 1988 one-hour television program on
chaos aroused many people's curiosity and interest. There are now quite a few books on the subject. Anyone
writing yet another book, on any topic, inevitably goes through the routine of justifying it. My justification
consists of two reasons
Despite all the skepticism, the ‘old savings’ bonds turned out to be the perfect
opportunity for the development of financial market in Serbia. This was a new and
liquid security that carried virtually no risk for its holders.
However, for a number of reasons, the bond market became distorted, dividing
into primary and secondary markets, with the secondary market further segmented
into over-the-counter and stock exchange markets.
In 1995, the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and
National Research Council issued a report entitled Allocating Federal Funds for Science and Technology, which
recommended tracking federal investments in the creation of new knowledge and technologies—what the report
referred to as the federal science and technology budget (FS&T).
BNDES has traditionally had an important role in the Brazilian financial system, but its size
has doubled in the post-Lehman period. BNDES has typically been a major source of long-
term financing for industry and infrastructure. During the crisis, it played an important
counter-cyclical role as private bank credit fell off sharply in 2009 during the height of the
Lehman related global tensions.
