  • This paper describes a numerical model for the simulation of near shore wave dynamics  and bottom topography change. In this part, the nearshore wave dynamics is simulated by solving  the  depth  integrated  Boussinesq  approximation  equations  for  nearshore  wave  transformation  together with continuity equation with a Crank‐Nicholson scheme. The wave runup on beaches is  simulated by a scheme, similar to the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) technique.

  • Online reviews are often accompanied with numerical ratings provided by users for a set of service or product aspects. We propose a statistical model which is able to discover corresponding topics in text and extract textual evidence from reviews supporting each of these aspect ratings – a fundamental problem in aspect-based sentiment summarization (Hu and Liu, 2004a). Our model achieves high accuracy, without any explicitly labeled data except the user provided opinion ratings.

  • (BQ)In this paper a new contribution to the simulation and modelling of the EDM process is presented. Temperature fields within the workpiece generated by the superposition of multiple discharges, as it happens during an actual EDM operation, are numerically calculated using a finite difference schema. The characteristics of the discharge for a given operation, namely energy transferred onto the workpiece, diameter of the discharge channel and material removal efficiency can be estimated using inverse identification from the results of the numerical model.

  • A numerical model using the 1D shallow water equations was developed for the simulation of long wave propagation and runup. The developed model is based on the Finite Volume Method (FVM) with an application of Godunov - type scheme of second order of accuracy. The model uses the HLL approximate Riemann solver for the determination of numerical fluxes at cell interfaces. The model was applied to the simulation of long wave propagation and runup on a plane beach and simulated results were compared with the published experimental data. The comparison shows that the present model has a power...

  • Morphology change at tidal influent estuary is controlled by the net sediment transport rate of river and tidal transport, and variations in features (bathymetry, structures, etc.) where scour and shoaling take place. To examine river and tidal exchange sediment transport in a systematic way, we investigated sediment transportation at the Bach Dang estuary with a coupled tide, wave and sediment transport-morphology change numerical modeling system. Five simulations consisting of

  • Floods in urban areas due to levee overtopping and/or breaking may cause a lot of severe damage of property and lost of human lives. In case of river dike and/or dam break, the problem is characterized by the overland propagation of discontinuity fronts or hydraulic jumps. !t is of immense importance that urban planners and personnel have tools to assist in predicting and evaluating beforehand the flood process in such incidents.

  • This paper discusses two problems that arise in the Generation of Referring Expressions: (a) numeric-valued attributes, such as size or location; (b) perspective-taking in reference. Both problems, it is argued, can be resolved if some structure is imposed on the available knowledge prior to content determination. We describe a clustering algorithm which is sufficiently general to be applied to these diverse problems, discuss its application, and evaluate its performance. close’ on the given dimension, and ‘sufficiently distant’ from those of their distractors. ...

  • Parsing techniques based on rules defining grammaticality are difficult to use with authentic inputs, which are often grammatically messy. Instead, the APRIL system seeks a labelled tree su~cture which maximizes a numerical measure of conformity to statistical norms derived flom a sample of parsed text. No distinction between legal and illegal trees arises: any labelled tree has a value.

  • (BQ) In the present study, the temperature distribution on the surface of workpiece and tool during a single discharge in the electrical discharge machining process has been simulated using ABAQUS code finite element software. The temperature dependency of material properties and the expanding of plasma channel radius with time have been employed in the simulation stage. The profile of temperature distribution has been utilized to calculate the dimensions of discharge crater.

  • The analysis model of a structure includes nodes (joints), elements and boundary conditions. Finite elements are used in data entry, representing members of the structure for numerical analysis, and nodes define the locations of such members. Boundary conditions represent the status of connections between the structure and neighboring structures such as foundations. A structural analysis refers to mathematical simulations of a numerical analysis model of a structure.

Part I is methodological, and offers a comprehensive toolkit on numerical methods and algorithms. This includes Monte Carlo simulation, numerical schemes for partial differential equations, stochastic optimization in discrete time, copula functions, transform-based methods and quadrature techniques. Part II is practical, and features a number of self-contained cases.

True, there are more sophisticated mathematical applications, such as Mathematica, MathCAD, Maple, etc., but none are as widely available as Microsoft Excel.

  • This book aims to give a complete and self-contained presentation of semi- Markov models with finitely many states, in view of solving real life problems of risk management in three main fields: Finance, Insurance and Reliability providing a useful complement to our first book (Janssen and Manca (2006)) which gives a theoretical presentation of semi-Markov theory. However, to help assure the book is self-contained, the first three chapters provide a summary of the basic tools on semi-Markov theory that the reader will need to understand our presentation.
