  • To quantify the impact of luck on mutual fund performance, we use the False Discovery Rate (F DR) introduced by Benjamini and Hochberg (1995) in the statistical literature. The F DR measures the proportion of lucky funds among the funds with significant estimated alphas. We extend this methodology by developing a new approach which allows us to separately compute the F DR among funds with significant positive estimated alphas (called hereafter the best funds) and funds with significant negative estimated alphas (called hereafter the worst funds)....

  • In addition, the fact that there have been few studies investigating the efficacy of conversational implicature to enhance Japanese high school students’ communicative competence was another cause for me to start this research. Though some experimental studies have been done (see Bouton,1992; Broersma, 1994; Kubota, 1995; and Taguchi, 2007), the subjects of their research were university students and immigrants. Few people seem to have examined students’ development of communicative ability in Japanese high school.

  • The inclusion of a smooth function of time in a regression model introduces important sta- tistical issues. We generally do not know precisely the complexity of the seasonal and long-term trends in themortality time series or in the pollution time series. Therefore, a controversial issue is determining how much smoothness we should allow for the smooth function of time. This decision is critical because it determines the amount of residual temporal variation in mortality that is available to estimate the air pollution effect.

And indeed, according to Meinong and Witasek, such is the case in the domain of `presentations' and other psychic phenomena. That which I experience when I `see' the sheriff on the screen is not strictly speaking, a presentation at all, for when I present to myself the sheriff in the throes of death, there is no (existing) object which is presented to me (and here it is irrelevant whether a certain person - an actor - was involved at an early stage...

Greenplum gives enterprises the best of both worlds—MapReduce for programmers and SQL for DBAs—and will execute both MapReduce and SQL directly within Greenplum’s Parallel Dataflow Engine (Figure 10), which is at the heart of the database. Greenplum MapReduce enables programmers to run analytics against petabyte-scale datasets stored in and outside of Greenplum Database.

  • To trust in one’s rational faculty means to question and to endure doubt. Sometimes the fear of doubt can be stronger than the fear of death, when extreme doubt leads someone to be receptive to the extreme certainty of a violent ideology – the most fashionable of which (though by no means the only one) is currently radical Islamism. The attraction of radical Islamism is similar to the psycho- logical appeal of other secular totalitarian ideologies of the 20th century, in that it dispels all doubt.

In this study, we found that there are wide spectra of final beneficiaries and intermediaries and concluded that there is no common microfinance business model in Europe. While our findings suggested that the microfinance market is immature and fragmented, they also pointed to its growing importance as a market segment with a potential to counter poverty and unemployment while fostering financial and social inclusion.

Having real data with high skew has always been problematic, but in this new world the relational operators are just the outer loop of a non- procedural program that should be executed with the least cost and in parallel. Cost-based static-plan optimizers continue...
