  • Why did I decide to write this book? As an undergraduate student I could not make up my mind whether I wanted to be a zoologist or a botanist, so I decided to adopt ecology, in its broadest sense, as my area of interest. This led me to think about interactions among organisms and to try to look at ecosystems from a holistic, rather than from an autecological, point of view. As someone with little formal training in mycology, my interest in fungi started during my doctoral research, especially when attending university-wide lectures by C. T. Ingold, given at the University of London.

  • Decreases in pH and ANC are often paral- leled by changes in element concentrations including increases in Al +3 concentrations and decreases in Ca +2 . High dissolved Al +3 concen- trations can have toxic effects on many types of aquatic biota, and at extreme levels few aquatic species can survive (Table 1). Organic forms of Al +3 are much less toxic than inorganic forms. Emerging research suggests that Ca +2 concentra- tions in streamwater are also an important bio- logical indicator.

  • For surface treatment processes of metals and plastics by electrolytic and chemical processes using solvents, the Integrated Pollution, Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive 96/61/EC applies. Industrial production processes account for a considerable share of overall pollution in Europe (for emissions of greenhouse gases and acidifying substances, wastewater emissions and waste). The EU has established a set of common rules for permitting and controlling industrial installations in this IPPC Directive.
