  • We describe how movement is handled in a class of computational devices called active production networks (APNs). The APN model is a parallel, activation-basod framework that ha= been applied to other aspects of natural language processing. The model is briefly defined, the notation and mechanism for movement is explained, and then several examples are given which illustrate how various conditions on movement can naturally be explained in terms of limitations of the APN device. I.

  • This research examines how differences in the organization of brand information in memory between higher and lower knowledge consumers affects which brands are retrieved when consumers are provided with a usage situation. A spreading activation network model of memory is used to predict the results of an experiment where the usage situations were varied at encoding and repeated recall sessions.

  • Sales of herbal products have increased dramatically over the past five years. Unfortunately, the knowledge base devoted to the adverse effects of these products has not grown in proportion to their increased usage. Data of questionable accuracy, often designed to sell products rather than to provide objective information, can be found in the print and electronic media, most notably on the Internet. Even in medical journals, misleading information about the beneficial and adverse effects of herbs can be found....

  • Several industries will need to contribute to successfully achieve this renewable resources vision. The Executive Steering Group therefore turned to a broad range of disciplines, including crop production, forestry, genomics, chemical processing, fermentation, industrial enzymes, materials science, biotechnology, plant physiology, and product manufacturing. The steering group sought input on key barriers, research goals, and interactions among related areas from more than 120 scientific experts and marketing professionals.

  • Pharmaceutical products covered in the Pharmaceutical Zero-for-Zero Initiative can be imported either as bulk active ingredients or in dosage forms that can be packaged for retail sale. Products in dosage form are generally classified under chapter 30 of the HTS, where most of the subheadings are duty-free. Many of the bulk pharmaceutical active ingredients and chemical intermediates are classified under HTS subheadings that also contain non-pharmaceutical products and have rates of duty ranging from 0 to 6.5 percent ad valorem.

  • The water-soluble crude polysaccharides obtained from the liquid culture broth of Cordyceps militaris by ethanol precipitation were fractionated by DEAE cellulose and Sepharose CL-6B column chromatography. This fractionation process resulted in three polysaccharide fractions that were termed CPSN Fr I, CPSN Fr II, and CPSN Fr III. Of the fractions, CPSN Fr II was able to upregulate the functional events mediated by activated macrophages, such as production of nitric oxide (NO) and expression of cytokines (IL-1 and TNF-).

  • Information Systems have played an increasingly visible role over the past several years in improving the competitiveness of business. They are more than just tools for handling repetitive tasks; they will guide and advance all of a company’s daily activities. Integrated Management Software is today very often a key source of significant competitive advantage.

  • Dalton et al. reported the average production costs and returns for 2004 from a sample of 30 organic dairy farms in Vermont and Maine. They reported a total cost for organic milk production of $22.58 per cwt, before a deduction for unpaid operator labor and management, which was not significantly different from milk revenues. Thus organic milk production did not generate any return to unpaid labor and management nor did it produce a positive return to farm assets or equity.

  • During the years surrounding the new millennium, the field of vibrational optical activity (VOA), comprised principally of vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and vibrational Raman optical activity (ROA), underwent a transition from a specialized area of research that had been practiced by a handful of pioneers into an important newfield of spectroscopy practiced by an increasing number of scientists worldwide. This transition was made possible by the development of commercial instrumentation and software for the routine measurement and quantum chemical calculation ofVOA.

  • Supreme Court justices are an aging tribe. Their longevity is a product of the legal safeguards established to ensure their independence. They are entitled to serve (and keep on serving) during “good behavior,” which means (in practical effect) as long as they want to. And they invariably want to for a very long time. The justices now in place are an especially elderly lot. Then again, they, too, are mortal. Vacancies occasionally appear to be fi lled by comparatively youthful men and women whose nominations evoke heated debate....

  • As the U.S. Army transforms its combat force, inevitably the institu- tional Army—the “generating force” that fills and sustains the Army’s combat units—must change as well. Stabilizing soldiers at posts and in units demands different personnel and training routines from those that supported the Army’s long-standing “individual replacement” system.

  • Glutaminase from Micrococcus luteusK-3 [Micrococcusglutaminase (Mglu); 456 amino acid residues (aa); 48 kDa] is a salt-tolerant enzyme. Our previous study determined the structure of its major 42-kDa fragment. Here, using new crystallization conditions, we determined the structures of the intact enzyme in the presence and absence of its product l-glutamate and its activator Tris, which activates the enzyme by sixfold.

  • Flavin-dependent thymidylate synthases (FDTS) catalyze the production of dTMP from dUMP and N 5 ,N 10 -methylene-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolate (CH2H4 folate). In contrast to human and other classical thymidylate synth-ases, the activity of FDTS depends on a FAD coenzyme, and its catalytic mechanism is very different.
