  • JavaScript is at a turning point. The language and those who program with it have matured. People are starting to realize that it is a complex subject, worthy of further study. Design patterns have been used in programming for years. They were first formally documented in Design Patterns by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vlissides (affectionately known as the Gang of Four) and have been applied to countless object-oriented languages. Part of the appeal of design patterns is that they can be used uniformly over many different languages and syntaxes.

  • Welcome to MapReduce Design Patterns! This book will be unique in some ways and familiar in others. First and foremost, this book is obviously about design patterns, which are templates or general guides to solving problems. We took a look at other design patterns books that have been written in the past as inspiration, particularly Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software, by Gamma et al. (1995), which is commonly referred to as “The Gang of Four” book. For each pattern, you’ll see a template that we reuse over and over that we loosely based off of their book.

  • Design patterns are reusable solutions to commonly occurring problems in software design. They are both exciting and a fascinating topic to explore in any programming language. One reason for this is that they help us build upon the combined experience of many developers that came before us and ensure we structure our code in an optimized way, meeting the needs of problems we're attempting to solve. Design patterns also provide us a common vocabulary to describe solutions.

  • Mining bilingual data (including bilingual sentences and terms1) from the Web can benefit many NLP applications, such as machine translation and cross language information retrieval. In this paper, based on the observation that bilingual data in many web pages appear collectively following similar patterns, an adaptive pattern-based bilingual data mining method is proposed.

  • When you’re faced with a problem to solve (and frankly, who isn’t these days?), the basic strategy usually taken by we computer people is called “divide and conquer.” It goes like this:Reducing complex problems down to the level of twiddling the states of a few billion bits is what we do all day. But “divide and conquer” is not the only possible strategy. We can also take a more generalist approach:

  • With Pro JavaScript Design Patterns, you’ll start with the basics of object–oriented programming in JavaScript applicable to design patterns, including making JavaScript more expressive, inheritance, encapsulation, information hiding, and more. With that covered, you can kick–start your JavaScript development in the second part of the book, where you’ll find detail on how to implement and take advantage of several design patterns in JavaScript, including composites, decorators, façades, adapters, and many more....

  • This book isn't an introduction to object-oriented technology or design. Many books already do a good job of that. This book assumes you are reasonably proficient in at least one object-oriented programming language, and you should have some experience in object-oriented design as well. You definitely shouldn't have to rush to the nearest dictionary the moment we mention "types" and "polymorphism," or "interface" as opposed to "implementation” inheritance.

  • We propose a method for analyzing long complex and compound sentences that utilizes global structure analysis with domain-specific pattern grammar. Previously, long sentence analysis with global information used the following methods: two-level analysis--global structure analysis of long sentences with domain-independent function words and parsing of their constituents[Doi et al., 1991], and pattern matching--adaptation of domain-specific fixed pattern to input sentences. By utilizing domaindependent information the latter method could analyze long sentences of that domain.

Scores of worked examples illustrate fine points, compare techniques and algorithms and facilitate comprehension of fundamental concepts. Also features an abundance of interesting and challenging problems at the end of every chapter.

  • As a result of adaptation to desert conditions, camels acquire the ability to produce diluted milk. This involves the production of milk with a higher water content when the animal is dehydrated than when it is fully watered. They do this by withdrawing water preferentially from the intestines under the action of prolactin and oxytocin. The ability to dilute milk under similar conditions of water stress has also been demonstrated in women and in cows. Milk dilution is not known in other mammals.

  • The olive is one of the most ancient cultivated fruit trees. Olive cultivation has a very long history which started from the Third Millennium BC (Loukas & Krimbas, 1983) in the Eastern region of the Mediterranean sea and spread later around the basin following land and maritime routes to Italy, Spain, North Africa and France. Nowadays there are about 805 million of olive trees, 98% of which are grown in the Mediterranean countries (Tsitsipis et al., 2009). The foremost consuming countries are also the main olive oil producers.

  • The pattern of treatment of issues in this new edition follows that established with the fourth edition; nevertheless there are important changes. For instance, in the preface to the previous edition I wrote, “The five years since the third edition of Human Evolution: An Illustrated Introduction have been an extraordinarily productive time for paleoanthropology,” not least because of the number of new species of early humans that had been discovered. The same can be said of the period between the fourth and fifth editions. Since 1999 four new species of hominin have been announced.

If there is a positive effect of mother’s education as knowledge on children’s health, certain type of policies concerning the diffusion of specific information at community levels can be called for. For example, one important channel through which mother’s education as knowledge can affect child’s health at a community level is through the usage of health facilities which can serve as a complement or even as a substitute for the mother’s education.
