  • Evolution and development are the two biological processes most associated with the idea of organic change. Indeed, the very notion of evolution originally referred to the unfolding of a preformed structure within the developing embryo and only later acquired its current meaning as the transformation of species through time. It seems, therefore, only logical to assume that the biological disciplines that study these two different phenomena- embryology, later transformed into developmental biology, and evolutionary biology, especially phylogenetics-would be closely related....

  • inaccuracies lead to the deviation of operational space trajectory provided by the kinematic mapping. One method to deal with this issue can be found in an adaptive control. Xu and Gu proposed an adaptive control scheme for space robots in both joint space and operational space [Xu et al., 1992, Gu & Xu, 1993]. However, the adaptive control proposed in [Xu et al., 1992] requires perfect attitude control and the adaptive control in [Gu & Xu, 1993] is developed based on an under-actuated system on the assumption that the acceleration of the base-satellite is measurable.

  • This chapter addresses the most general problem formulation of detection in linear systems. Basically, all problem formulations that have been discussed so far are included in the framework considered. The main purpose is to survey multiple model algorithms, and a secondary purpose is to overview and compare the state of the art in different application areas for reducing complexity, where similar algorithms have been developed independently.

  • In Chapter 2 the equalizers operated under the assumption of perfect channel estimation, where the receiver always had perfect knowledge of the CIR. However, the CIR is typically time variant and consequently the receiver has to estimate the CIR or the coefficients of the equalizer, in order to compensate the IS1 induced by the channel. for Algorithms have been developed in order to automatically adapt the coefficients of the equalizer directly [ l 181 or by utilizing the estimated CIR [124,125]....

  • This paper presents an analysis of the benefits of climate change adaptation from small and medium scale hydropower plants in Lao Cai Province. Lao Cai is a mountainous province with high hydropower potential. Totally 116 small and medium hydropower projects in different stages of development have been identified with installed capacities ranging from 0.9 MW to 60 MW. Based on the results of statistic downscaling, four climate change scenarios were developed for the Lao Cai province area.

  • The universities must develop new fields of multi-discipline research in building design, engineering, energy and carbon efficiency, directed towards providing the industry with feedback on the success or otherwise of current initiatives. This will create numerous opportunities for industrial and international partnerships, supported by a wide range of new funding and revenue streams, not traditionally available to academic researchers.

It is the willingness and ability to embrace fully and experience the broad spectrum of emotional states, including those that are painful and distressing, that may be key to mental health and adaptive personal development.

  • In spite of decades of research on word sense disambiguation (WSD), all-words general purpose WSD has remained a distant goal. Many supervised WSD systems have been built, but the effort of creating the training corpus - annotated sense marked corpora - has always been a matter of concern. Therefore, attempts have been made to develop unsupervised and knowledge based techniques for WSD which do not need sense marked corpora. However such approaches have not proved effective, since they typically do not better Wordnet first sense baseline accuracy. ...

  • The lack of positive results on supervised domain adaptation for WSD have cast some doubts on the utility of handtagging general corpora and thus developing generic supervised WSD systems. In this paper we show for the first time that our WSD system trained on a general source corpus (B NC) and the target corpus, obtains up to 22% error reduction when compared to a system trained on the target corpus alone. In addition, we show that as little as 40% of the target corpus (when supplemented with the source corpus) is sufficient to obtain the same results as training...

  • We investigate the problem of domain adaptation for parallel data in Statistical Machine Translation (SMT). While techniques for domain adaptation of monolingual data can be borrowed for parallel data, we explore conceptual differences between translation model and language model domain adaptation and their effect on performance, such as the fact that translation models typically consist of several features that have different characteristics and can be optimized separately.

  • Fiscal records pertain to the financial transactions of the agency, such as budgets, ledgers, allotments, payrolls and vouchers. After some records have served a basic administrative function, they may still have sufficient fiscal value to justify additional retention to protect the agency against court action and/or audits. Some records will also have enduring value because they reflect significant historical events or document the history and development of an agency. Others contain accumulated data that can be useful for both scientific and genealogical research.

  • AMBER is a model of first language acquisition that improves its performance through a process of error recovery. The model is implemented as an adaptive production system that introduces new condition-action rules on the basis of experience. AMBER starts with the ability to say only one word at a time, but adds rules for ordering goals and producing grammatical morphemes, based on comparisons between predicted and observed sentences.
