  • Multiple sequence alignment techniques have recently gained popularity in the Natural Language community, especially for tasks such as machine translation, text generation, and paraphrase identification. Prior work falls into two categories, depending on the type of input used: (a) parallel corpora (e.g., multiple translations of the same text) or (b) comparable texts (non-parallel but on the same topic). So far, only techniques based on parallel texts have successfully used syntactic information to guide alignments. ...

  • Searching for a person name in a Web Search Engine usually leads to a number of web pages that refer to several people sharing the same name. In this paper we study whether it is reasonable to assume that pages about the desired person can be filtered by the user by adding query terms. • Indexes are important. Not only that, they are vastly important. No single structure aids in retrieving data from a database more than an index. Indexes represent both how data is stored and the access paths by which data can be retrieved from your database. Without indexes, a database is an unordered mess minus the roadmap to find the information you seek. Throughout my experience with customers, one of the most common resolutions that I provide for performance tuning and application outages is to add indexes to their databases.

In order to achieve high scalability, how- ever, today’s systems generally reduce transactional support, disal- lowing single transactions fromspanning multiple partitions. Calvin is a practical transaction scheduling and data replication layer that uses a deterministic ordering guarantee to significantly reduce the normally prohibitive contention costs associated with distributed transactions.

Thus DNS is already an integral part of email appli- cations today. The costs of adding support in the application to be able to look up other data are small. And unlike LDAP, additional configuration by the user will not be required. We have implemented S/MIME functionality in a email client, with certificate fetching from DNS, as a proof of concept.

It is in the Internet’s nooks and crannies that the true “tastiness” often lies. Almost every Internet user has used Google and probably Yahoo!, and any group of experienced searchers could probably come up with a dozen or so sites that every one of them had used.

The team arrives at an estimate of how long the project will take by adding up detailed estimates of the individual steps involved.
