  • This paper addresses the task of handling unknown terms in SMT. We propose using source-language monolingual models and resources to paraphrase the source text prior to translation. We further present a conceptual extension to prior work by allowing translations of entailed texts rather than paraphrases only. A method for performing this process efficiently is presented and applied to some 2500 sentences with unknown terms. Our experiments show that the proposed approach substantially increases the number of properly translated texts. ...

  • In this paper, we study the problem of extracting technical paraphrases from a parallel software corpus, namely, a collection of duplicate bug reports. Paraphrase acquisition is a fundamental task in the emerging area of text mining for software engineering. Existing paraphrase extraction methods are not entirely suitable here due to the noisy nature of bug reports. We propose a number of techniques to address the noisy data problem.

  • Like English, Korean has different styles of speaking and writing that reflect the genre, the setting, and the audience. A chat in a gym with a friend employs quite different words and constructions than a news report to a national TV audience. This chapter focuses on the use of sentence-final verb endings, whose selection is sensitive to whether the genre is written or spoken, to whether the setting is formal or informal, and to how close the speaker feels to the hearer.

  • One finds that there is a positive correlation between a country’s level of development and insurance coverage. Developed countries tend to have better developed and well- functioning insurance services sectors both domestically and in terms of insurance exports, as compared to developing countries. This is perhaps most evident when one compares the share of industrialized countries in the world insurance markets, which in 2004 stood at 88.5 per cent as compared with 11.4 per cent for emerging markets, the majority of which are developing countries.

  • Allocation is a cross-cutting challenge that has risen to priority status with the rapidly approaching deadlines for the implementation of annual catch limits (ACLs) and accountability measures (AMs). Allocation discussions and decisions are unique to each fishery and are shaped by innumerable natural, social and economic factors. Despite these differences, all allocation decisions address the fundamental question of how to distribute a limited renewable resource among user groups. Allocation decisions introduce new challenges as well as opportunities.

  • Since the financial crisis, there has been renewed interest in documenting the balance- sheet positions of financial institutions. We share the important goal of this literature: to come up with data on positions that will inform the theoretical modeling of these insti- tutions, as called for by Franklin Allen in his 2001 AFA presidential address. Adrian and Shin (2011) investigate the behavior of Value-at-Risk measures reported by investment banks.

  • The Baby Boomer generation is substantially different from earlier generations and policies need to account for those differences. They will remain active and independent longer than previous generations; as a group, they have sufficient wealth to manage retirement as no previous generation has; and they are going to challenge how the elderly are treated and what should be considered acceptable. Understanding the scope of the challenge is one of the first steps. The research summarized in this report begins to address this need.

  • All SAIs face a situation in which the potential audits they might perform far exceed the audit resources that are available, in terms of the number and mix of skills of the audit staff. These constraints limit both the number and the type of audits that an SAI can undertake. For example, audit staff that are skilled in performing certain kinds of regularity audits may not have the skills needed to carry out certain types of performance audits and vice versa. Thus, in seeking high levels of quality, the first task of an SAI (or of...

  • The research detailed in this paper is used to question the utility of investigating the consumption of counterfeiting not through the lens of subcultures, ethics or legality, but as a more routine and situated practice. As such it draws upon broad survey data of consumers and non-consumers of counterfeit and pirated goods. It also details a range of consumer and leisure items to address the limitations of previous empirical research based upon smaller or more homogenous consumer samples (e.g., Albers- Miller, 1999) or products (e.g., Ang et al., 2001).

  • After a few months of respite brought about mainly by the provision of longer-term liquidity by the Eurosystem in early 2012, the sovereign-debt crisis intensified again in spring. However, financial markets have recovered since July, helped by important policy decisions in the EU and the announcement of further monetary easing on both sides of the Atlantic. Sovereign yields in most vulnerable countries have receded somewhat since summer. Risk appetite appears to have improved as stock markets have recuperated the losses experienced earlier in the year.
