In response to a request from the National Economic Council, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE)
convened a workshop on 30 April 1999 to assess the potential value of federally sponsored prizes and contests in
advancing science and technology in the public interest. A five-member steering committee1 was appointed by
NAE President Wm. A. Wulf to organize the workshop and prepare a brief summary report to sponsors. Funding
was provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

To evaluate the immune activation and reactive oxygen species scavenging activity of Cordyceps militaris
polysaccharides (CMP) in vivo, 90 male BALB/c mice were randomly divided into six groups. The
mice in the three experimental groups were given cyclophosphamide at 80 mg/kg/d via intraperitoneal
injection and 17.5, 35, or 70 mg/kg body weight CMP via gavage. The lymphocyte proliferation, phagocytic
index, and biochemical parameters were measured.
ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS MANAGEMENT'S PREPERENCES FOR ACOUNTING STANDARDS The model stacks the deck, however, by holding the distribution of effectiveness
fixed. If school administrators respond to incentives, effectiveness sorting will also induce
higher effort and greater effectiveness. This will tend to raise scores for everyone, and the
productivity benefits may offset the allocative costs that Tiebout choice imposes on poor
THE ROLE OF IMPORT SUBSITITUTION AND EXPORT ORIENTATION STRATEGIES ON THAILAND'ECONOMIC GROWTH This result calls the incentive effects of Tiebout choice into question, as it indicates
that administrators of effective schools are no more likely to be rewarded with high demand
for local housing in high-choice than in low-choice markets. To explore this further, I
estimate models for the effect of Tiebout choice on mean scores across metropolitan areas.
Consistent with the earlier results, I find no evidence that high-choice markets produce
higher average SAT scores.
WAGE RETURNS FOR POST -SECONDARY EDUCATION: A COMPARISON FOR SELECTED PROGRAMS BY LEVELS OF EDUCATION AND INDUSTRY TYPE The potential effects of school choice programs depend critically on what
characteristics parents value in schools. Hanushek, for example, notes that parents might
not choose effective schools over others that are less effective but offer pleasant
surroundings, athletic facilities, [and] cultural advantages, (1981, p. 34). To the extent that
parents choose productive schools, market discipline can induce greater productivity from
school administrators and teachers.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Adverse Drug Reactions The manifestations of drug-induced diseases frequently resemble those of other diseases, and a given set of manifestations may be produced by different and dissimilar drugs. Recognition of the role of a drug or drugs in an illness depends on appreciation of the possible adverse reactions to drugs in any disease, on identification of the temporal relationship between drug administration and development of the illness, and on familiarity with the common manifestations of the drugs.
Paraplegia remains a potential complication of spinal cord ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI) in which oxidative stress induced cyclooxygenase activities may contribute to ischemic neuronal damage. Prolonged administration of vitamin E (α-TOL), as a potent biological antioxidant, may have a protective role in this oxidative inflammatory ischemic cascade to reduce the incidence of paraplegia. The present study was designed to evaluate the preventive value of α-TOL in IRI of spinal cord.

Several studies have shown that deficient uptake or excessive break down
of membrane phospholipids may be associated with neurodegenerative and
psychiatric disorders. The purpose of the present study was to examine the
effects of postnatal iron administration in lipid composition and behavior
and whether or not the established effects may be altered by subchronic
administration of the neuroleptic compounds, clozapine and haloperidol.
Administration of the chemical carcinogen, 3-methylcholanthrene (3MC),
in the hind leg induces the progressive formation of tumors in mice within
110 days. Previous reports suggest that transformation of muscle cells to
atypical cells is one of the causes of tumor formation.
The insect ecdysteroid receptor consists of a heterodimer between EcR and the RXR-orthologue, USP. We addressed the question of whether this heterodimer, like all other RXR heterodimers, may be formed in the absence of ligand and whether ligand promotes dimerization. We found that C-terminal protein fragments that comprised the ligand binding, but not the DNA binding domain of EcR and USP and which were equipped with the activation or DNA binding region of GAL4, respectively, exhibit a weak ability to interact spontaneously with each other.
Main technical issues to be resolved before greater implementation of aluminum alloys
in ship structures include weld quality since these alloys are more difficult to weld
relative to steel and that shipyards typically have limited experience in these alloys. In
terms of mechanical properties, aluminum alloys generally exhibit lower fatigue
strength when compared to steel. As-welded fatigue properties can be as low as 6 to 7
ksi (Czyryca et al 2006).
Immunologic Effects Exposure to solar radiation causes local (inhibition of immune responses to antigens applied at the irradiated site) and systemic (inhibition of immune responses to antigens applied at remote unirradiated sites) immunosuppression. The action spectrum for UV-induced immunosuppression closely mimics the absorption spectrum of DNA. Pyrimidine dimers in LCs may inhibit antigen presentation. The absorption spectrum of epidermal urocanic acid closely mimics the action spectrum for UV-B-induced immunosuppression.
