First off, let me state the object of the meeting: This is to be a record of sundry experiences centering round a
stern resolve to get on the waterwagon and a sterner attempt to stay there. It is an entirely personal narrative of
a strictly personal set of circumstances. It is not a temperance lecture, or a temperance tract, or a chunk of
advice, or a shuddering recital of the woes of a horrible example, or a warning, or an admonition--or anything
at all but a plain tale of an adventure that started out rather vaguely and wound up rather satisfactorily.
I am no brand...
The sword of Harry Gilmor, the Confederate colonel, which General Wallace had given me, had aroused
Graham's interest so much that I presented it to him; I had, prior to this, presented to Curtis, my Creedmoor
rifle trophies. I had become tired of telling the history of that sword and how it came into my possession,
having no other evidence than my word for the truth of the story, since I had lost General Wallace's letter.
Hello! My name's Rob Fellows. I come from Dundee, a town on the coast of Scotland, but I'm a student at Durham University, in the north of England. I'm studying French and German, and I can speak the languages quite well. I also know a little Spanish, so I can speak four languages. I'm enjoying the course a lot, but it's very hard work!
I live in Durham Castle, because the Castle is part of the University, with about thirty other students. The course started two years ago, and I'm in my third year. After the course I'm going to work...
The purpose of this book is to share some of the tips, techniques, and
observations that have worked for me and other highly successful
traders. After nearly 23 years as a registered broker in the futures and
options field, I have come to know quite a few successful traders and have
personally made many successful trades. I have also experienced my share
of disasters and have known traders and investors who were doomed for
I started exploring telecommunications’ frontiers at the tender age of nine,
way back in 1964. That was the year I visited the New York World’s Fair and
found myself, quite unexpectedly, drafted into a corporate public relations
Back then, nearly all U.S. telecommunications—hardware, software and
service—was concentrated in the hands of a giant monopoly—the American
Telephone and Telegraph Co. AT&T’s showplace at the fair was the Bell
System Pavilion. (Fig. Intro.-1).
It seems we are always dragged kicking and screaming into the newest operating system, programs, or hardware systems. This case is no different. Office 2007 is quite an initial adjustment
and might scare many at their first encounter with the new interface. After using Office 2007 for the past year, there is nothing you could offer me to go back to the previous version. I hope to calm your fears, open new avenues, and even help you to have a smooth deployment.
Shortly after my arrival at the OECD in 1996, I came upon the study by Angus Maddison
“Monitoring the World Economy 1820–1992”. It is a fascinating and stimulating work providing a
complete coverage of the world economy during the period in question. It brought together data of
some 56 countries accounting for 93 per cent of the world output and 87 per cent of the world population
and world exports. It never left my desk. Probably I was not alone in my appreciation of this quite
extraordinary work, as I kept coming on references to it in the work of other authors....

When Claus-Dieter Ehlermann asked me in late December 2004 whether I
would be willing to contribute to the 10th Annual Competition Law and
Policy Workshop, I was not quite sure whether he was about to offer me a
Christmas gift or another Dardanians’ present.
1 After all, the relationship
between the protection of intellectual property and the maintenance of free
competition is the subject of an age-old debate2 to which I had already con-
tributed too much, with too little impact.

Dear Reader, I wanted to take this opportunity to explain the rationale behind this book showing up on your shelf for free. Quite some time ago, Sams Publishing determined that the next big thing to hit the programmer/developer community would be Microsoft’s Visual Studio.NET and the .NET Framework. After discussions with many of you, our authors and key Microsoft team members, Sams dedicated itself to a strategy that would support your efforts to learn the .NET Framework as efficiently and as quickly as possible. A Programmer’s Introduction to Visual Basic.
At last the book is finished – and I have now been asked to put my mind to the Preface! It occurs to me that writing a Preface is a unique art form. Admittedly, after limited research into Preface-writing, I propose, like innumerable authors before me, to start with the usual whinge – yes, to paraphrase Mrs Beeton from the Preface of her famous cookbook, if we had known ‘. . . what courageous efforts were needed to be made’, I am quite sure that we would never have started this enterprise. However, it is clear that one of the...
Previously, after completing an engineering degree in India,
then working as a project manager in the Middle East, George
had decided he needed some formal qualifications to back up
his practical skills. He focused on an MBA specialising in project
management but researched his options thoroughly before
choosing Deakin. ‘I was quite fascinated by Australia as the land
of opportunity, and I looked at university ratings,’ he says.
I thought Deakin was one of the most progressive and its MBA
has been around for about 20 years. It was definitely the place to
It was easy to learn that she was not the Princess. I did that
by going into a stationer's shop and asking for a photograph of
the royal lovers. It was not quite so easy to find out who she
was, without pinning my new secret on my sleeve; but luckily
everyone in Biarritz boasted knowledge of the King's affairs, and
the affairs of the pretty Princess. Christopher Trevenna made
himself agreeable after dinner to the lady with the nose, who
would probably have shrunk away in fear if she had known that
she was talking with the Marqués de Casa Triana.
There are three things to be said in response to this concern. First, even if it
is sometimes true that sensing and adjusting is done automatically or unconsciously,
it is not always the case. When, after a long bout of reading, I straighten my frame
and enjoy a delicious sensation of stretching, this may be very consciously
appreciated and adjusted so as to work out subtle areas of tension that have built
up. The reciprocal relation of doing and undergoing is quite conscious: ‘the action
and its consequence’ are ‘joined in perception’ . ...
And they lived happily ever after. The End. What's this? You say something's still not clear about this whole C programming language thing?
Well, to be quite honest, I'm not even sure what the above code does. It's a snippet from one of the entires in the 2001 International Obfuscated C Code Contest 1, a wonderful competition wherein the entrants attempt to write the most unreadable C code possible, with often surprising results. The bad news is that if you're a beginner in this whole thing, all C code you see looks obfuscated! The good news is, it's not going to...
Originally I began this story with a number of instructive chapters on shipping an automobile, and I followed
with certain others full of pertinent comment on ocean travel in a day when all the seas were as a great
pleasure pond. They were very good chapters, and I hated to part with them, but my publisher had quite
positive views on the matter. He said those chapters were about as valuable now as June leaves are in
November, so I swept them aside in the same sad way that one disposes of the autumn drift and said I would
start with Marseilles, where, after fourteen...
The ecology of ideas of which this book is a part started to emerge in
my head a long time ago. As time passed new ideas were added, some of
which fl ourished, while others were unable to secure a spot in the evolving
landscape. The particular combination of insights that forms the main
argument of this book started taking shape after 27 November 2004. On
that day our twin sons Daniel and Nestor were born. For quite some time
after that I spent a lot of time holding one of them asleep in my arms. The
only thing I could do in parallel was reading. So...
