  • Ozone (O3) is well documented as the air pollutant most damaging to agricultural crops and other plants. Most crops in developed countries are grown in summer when O3 concentrations are elevated and frequently are sufficiently high to reduce yields. This article examines the difficulties in scientifically determining the reduction in yield that results from the exposure of agricultural crops to surface O3 and then transforming that knowledge into efficient and effective regulatory standards.

  • Agricultural biotechnology offers great promise for Africa and tissue culture and marker-assisted selection are already in widespread use across the continent. However, the safe application of these technologies requires functioning biosafety systems. The report focuses on the special issues related to biosafety in Africa.Crops can be improved by conventional breeding, by tissue culture and by marker-aided selection. But for many improvements - such as drought and salinity tolerance - GM technology is going to be essential.

  • Agricultural biotechnologies apply modern knowledge in molecular and cell biology to produce new varieties and similar genetic materials. The use of genetically modified (GM) crop varieties has grown dramatically since they were introduced in 1995, and large portions of the land allocated to corn, soybeans, and cotton are grown with these varieties. The evidence from the United States, Canada, China, India, Brazil, and Argentina suggests that these applications of biotechnology in agriculture increase yield, reduce the use of pesticides, and save production costs. ...

  • The work of the dry-farmer is only half done when the soil has been properly prepared, by deep plowing, cultivation, fallowing, for the planting of the crop. The choice of the crop, its proper seeding, and its correct care and harvesting are as important as rational soil treatment in the successful pursuit of dry-farming. It is true that in general the kinds of crops ordinarily cultivated in humid regions are grown also on arid lands, but varieties especially adapted to the prevailing dry-farm conditions must be used if any certainty of harvest is desired. Plants possess a marvelous power...

  • Enormous increases in agricultural productivity can properly be associated with the use of chemicals. This statement applies equally to crop production through the use offertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, as to livestock production and the associated use of drugs, steroids, and other growth accelerators. There is, however, a dark side to this picture and it is important to balance the benefits which flow from the use of agricultural chemicals against their environmental impacts, which sometimes are seriously disadvantageous.
