Purpose – The Encyclopedia of Operations Management (EOM) is an ideal “field manual” for students, instructors,
and practicing managers. For students, the EOM is a useful guide for developing an integrated mental map for the
entire field of supply chain and operations management. It has also proven useful as a reference for students
preparing for case discussions, exams, and job interviews. It is particularly helpful for students new to supply chain
and operations management and for international students who need precise definitions of specialized terms.
Psychiatric diagnosis requires doctors to make judgements based on their
understanding of their patients’ mental states and emotional processes, and relate these to a
‘normal’ or ‘healthy standard’. Clearly this exercise is (at the very least) much more difficult
where doctor and patient do not share a language, a set of concepts around the nature of
mind and emotion, and an understanding of what behaviours fall within and without each
others’ cultural norms.
Artificial neural networks may probably be the single most successful technology in the last two decades which has been widely used in a large variety of applications in various areas. The purpose of this book is to provide recent advances of artificial neural networks in biomedical applications. The book begins with fundamentals of artificial neural networks, which cover an introduction, design, and optimization.
Everyday, millions of medical images are produced worldwide, to aid diagnosis and treat‐
ment of patients. A typical patient’s diagnostic work-up is often incomplete without a medi‐
cal imaging technique. The various techniques for achieving this have continued to evolve,
from the basics through the sophisticated and now to the abstract.
Because of the availability of powerful computational techniques, new modality
techniques such as Computer-Aided Tomography (CAT), Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) and others, and because of the new techniques of imaging processing
(machine vision), the lives of many patients will be saved, and the quality of
all our lives improved. This marriage of powerful computer technology and medical
imaging has spawned a new and growing generation of young dynamic doctors
who hold PhDs in physics and/or computer science, along with their MDs.
Intelligent systems, known as expert systems, serve to this purpose in the extent that they have signed as facilitators in this process. These are systems that are based on expert knowledge, on any subject, in order to emulate human expertise in the specific field. To obtain this knowledge, the knowledge engineers, also called software engineers, need to develop methodologies for intelligent systems. In this area there is still no unified methodology that provides effective methods, notations and tools to aid in development....
One way in which agencies work together is by adopting a program known as local mutual
aid. This program allows neighboring communities to pool resources and share liability for
damages or loss of equipment. If one community needs a particular piece of equipment, it
may borrow it from a neighboring community. The equipment will become an asset of the
borrowing community and will be covered under their insurance until it is released and
returns to its home organization.

In French-speaking African countries the FHA/REDSO project is using the enter-educate
approach to address the problem of HIV/AIDS and to make people aware of how to prevent
the disease. Through a musical program—Wake Up Africa—about 30 African musicians are
helping to publicize the HIV/AIDS issue by creating and performing works on the theme of
HIV/AIDS prevention. Participants in Ouagadougou watched a new music video, Wake Up
Africa, produced by the FHA project featuring the musicians’ works.
This paper examines the integration of family planning (FP) services with HIV and AIDS services
(voluntary counselling and testing (VCT), prevention of mother-to-child-transmission (PMTCT)
and anti-retroviral therapy (ART)) in Uganda. The paper finds that: FP service integration is more
evident in VCT and PMTCT settings where counselling, provision of contraceptive methods other
than condoms, and information is available in varying degrees.
Viruses are obligate parasites which depend on living cells to multiply. Their ability to
deliver stable RNA and DNA into cells has determined their use in gene therapy. In 1983
Mann et al. developed one of the first retroviral gene therapy vectors for delivery in vitro
(Mann, Mulligan et al. 1983). This development was followed by many successfully gene
therapy trials of retroviruses (Anderson, Blaese et al. 1990; Levine and Friedmann 1991;
Blaese, Culver et al. 1993). Now, retrovirual vectors are implemented in nearly 22.2% of
clinical trials (http://www.wiley.
Pathfinder has developed a two-way referral system for infections and serious complications. CHWs send
clients to nearby health facilities with a referral note, which helps ensure that people living with HIV/AIDS are
seen promptly and free-of-charge. In some cases, if the client is too weak to travel alone and has no family to
accompany him, or is afraid of the stigma associated with being HIV-positive, the CHW escorts the client to
the health facility.
Technology aided by matching policy and institutional support propelled the productivity-
led growth in crop, animal, fish and horticulture production in India during the post-independence
period. Agricultural growth trend achieved until now outpaced population growth and ensured
food self-sufficiency. The Green, White, Blue and Yellow revolutions bear testimony to the success
of the strategies pursued in the past. For accelerating income growth, alleviating poverty and
enhancing nutrition security, agriculture sector has to move on to a higher growth trajectory in the
In the traditional region of Northern Nigeria, Pathfinder has struggled to promote the use of modern
contraceptive methods to delay and space pregnancies. Traditional communities in this area generally see
children as a gift from God and, assured that He will provide for their families, resist limiting their family size
or spacing women’s pregnancies. Sexuality is not openly discussed, so reaching families with RH/FP information
and services has been difficult.
Flowcharts provide a visual representation of a process or processes which often allow a better
understanding of how the process is intended to work. Project communications may be
extremely complex depending on the size and scope of the project and the number of
stakeholders. A flowchart provides all stakeholders with a better understanding of the steps
involved with the distribution of all project communications.
The communication flowchart below was created to aid in project communication. This
flowchart provides a framework for the project team to follow for this project.
A–Z of Chest Radiology provides a comprehensive, concise, easily
accessible radiological guide to the imaging of acute and chronic
chest conditions. Organised in A–Z format by disorder, each entry
gives easy access to the key clinical features of a disorder.
An introductory chapter guides the reader in how to review chest
X-rays accurately. This is followed by a detailed discussion of over
60 chest disorders, listing appearances, differential diagnoses, clinical
features, radiological advice andmanagement.
This second application of the global burden of disease
framework permits an analysis of trends observed since the
first application. The intervening period was clearly one of slow
progress, impeded by the HIV/AIDS epidemic and setbacks in
Eastern Europe. The volume is appropriately cautious in draw-
ing inferences about disease-specific trends because of changes
in data sources and, in some instances, improvements in
approaches to measurement.
