  • In most HVAC systems, the final energy transport medium is moist air—a mixture of dry air and water vapor. This is conveyed through filters, heat exchange equipment, ducts, and various terminal devices to the space to be air-conditioned. The power to move the air is supplied by fans. This chapter discusses fans and duct systems, together with related subjects such as grilles, registers, diffusers, dampers, filters, and noise control.

  • In 10 tests done on men, some of the fermentation parameters vary. These include: shell stored over fresh fruit, spread the beans before fermentation, soaking beans after fermentation and the length of fermentation time. In Dak Lak province, because lower ambient temperature, a "hot" fermentation procedure was trialed in an effort to bring the air temperature to those encountered in the Mekong region. These tests are usually carried out in parallel with the performance testing of solar dryers. A summary of the performance of solar dryers of Can Tho and Dak Lak also included....

  • Tzanck Smear A Tzanck smear is a cytologic technique most often used in the diagnosis of herpesvirus infections [herpes simplex virus (HSV) or varicella zoster virus (VZV)] (see Figs. 173-1 and 173-3). An early vesicle, not a pustule or crusted lesion, is unroofed, and the base of the lesion is scraped gently with a scalpel blade. The material is placed on a glass slide, air-dried, and stained with Giemsa or Wright's stain. Multinucleated epithelial giant cells suggest the presence of HSV or VZV; culture or immunofluorescence testing must be performed to identify the specific virus.

Put about 2 gram sample of air-dried bamboo in the crucible, determine the weight of crucible plus specimen, and place in the drying oven at 103±2o C with the crucible cover removed. Cool in a desiccator and weigh until the weight is constant. Place the crucible and contents in the muffle furnace and ignite until all the carbon is eliminated. Heat slowly at the start to avoid flaming and protect the crucible from strong...

  • There exists a range of solutions to reduce exposure to indoor air pollution. This includes reducing the source of pollution and altering the living environment and user behavior. Source reduction involves improved cooking devices (with or without flue attached), cleaner fuel, and reduced need for fire. Alterations to the living environment include improved ventilation and improved kitchen design and stove placement. Altered user behavior includes fuel drying, stove and chimney maintenance, use of pot lids to conserve heat, and keeping children away from the smoke (Bruce et al.

  • Breaking waves on the sea cause the ejection of many tiny droplets of seawater into the atmosphere. These droplets dry by evaporation leaving sea salt particles suspended in the air. Particles are also directly emitted by the bursting of air bubbles on sea surface Such particles are generally in the size range between 1 to 20µm. [19]. Whilst these particles are, in the main, rather coarse in size, a minor part of their mass is in particles small enough to have an appreciable atmospheric lifetime, which has been estimated as three days [20].

  • The action of the wind on dry loose soil surfaces leads to particles blowing into the air. Factors favouring the suspension of soil dust particles into the atmosphere are an exposed dry surface of fine soil and a high wind speed. In towns and cities, the areas of exposed soil, particularly in town centres, are rather small. However, there are considerable quantities of dusts on road and pavement surfaces which arise from ingress of soil on vehicle tyres and from the atmosphere, the erosion of the road surface itself and degradation of parts of the vehicle, especially the tyres.

  • After its emission or secondary formation, the length of time airborne matter will remain suspended in the air will depend upon its density, shape and size and meteorological conditions. Suspended particles are deposited by dry deposition, either by sedimentation and gravitational settling or impaction due to atmospheric turbulence and diffusion. This latter process is characteristic of particles which undergo Brownian movement and sizes below 0.1µm.

  • Trees absorb pollutants through the same process they take up nutrients, i.e. stomata (pores on the surface of the leaf), roots and root hairs. Additional pollution is removed by capture on their leaf/needle and bark surfaces. Taylor and Constable (1994) estimated for SO2 and O3 that 70% and 80% of the pollution absorbed is internal to the leaf. For particulates, the main wet absorption route is through tree roots (Broadmeadow and Freer-Smith, 1996), whereas the main dry absorption route is through deposition on leaf and bark surfaces.

  • An ideal aspirate is of creamy consistency with numerous cells suspended in a small amount of tissue fluid without admixture with blood. Such aspirates are smeared immediately using another slide or cover slip or with the needle itself and dropped into the fixative. At the beginning of the smearing process, while the material is still in a drop on the slide, the surface area for evaporation is relatively small and hence a short delay will not cause significant air-drying.

  • After the brushing is performed, the brush is rolled across the slide in an area approximately 2.5 centimeters in diameter (the size of a quarter) to produce a thin evenly layered smear. 8 The slide should be fixed immediately. Immediate fixation of the cellular sample is necessary to prevent air- drying which obscures cellular detail and compromises specimen evaluation. Fixation can be by immersion (preferably) or spray fixation. Immersion fixation consists of placing the smear into 95% alcohol or its equivalent.

  • Because there is significant variation and overlap in the appearance of dif- ferent etiologies of vaginitis, objective testing should always be undertaken. Any symptomatic, colored, or foul-smelling discharge should be sampled from the lateral vaginal wall for microscopic examination. Such specimens usually are obtained before other testing to decrease the presence of red blood cells. Secretions are mixed with a small amount of normal saline either in a test tube or on a slide with a protective cover slip to prevent air-drying.

  • Mexico City is one of the world s largest metropolitan areas, containing nearly 20 million inhabitants within the Valle de Mexico (also referred to as the Mexico City basin). The Valle de Mexico occupies ~1,300 km2 at a nominal elevation of 2,240 m above mean sea level, and is bordered on the east and west by mountains that rise 1,000 m above the valley floor, with low points to the north and south. Although its elevation is high, Mexico City s location at 19 degrees north latitude provides it with a temperate climate throughout the year.

  • Follow a good housekeeping schedule and disinfect in the proper way. Make sure that the floors, walls and bathrooms are clean! Clean and disinfect toys at least weekly. Disinfect the food preparation surfaces, eating surfaces and diapering tables. The simplest way to disinfect a surface includes three steps. The first step is to clean the surface with soap and thoroughly rinse with clean water. The second step is to spray or wipe the surface with a solution of 1/4 cup of household bleach in one gallon of water. The final step is to let the surface air dry in order...

  • Immediately after withdrawing, detach the needle, draw air into the syringe, reattach the needle and express the material in the needle onto a slide. Needle tip is brought into light contact with the slide and the aspirate is carefully expressed without spraying into the air, which can cause air-drying and also can form aerosols, which are potentially infectious. Preparing proper smears is critical for the end results. No matter how expertly the aspiration is performed, if the slides are not interpretable, the procedure is totally worthless for cytologic diagnosis.

Other important information about PTB such as previous BCG vaccination, contact with an index case and exposure to tuberculin skin test were also obtained. Laboratory investigations: Three early morning sputum were collected from each consenting asymptomatic subject. The samples were transported to TB laboratory of the department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, UCH, for immediate processing.
