Research, development and industrialisation of renewable energy are currently moving at a rapid pace
worldwide. Biofuels play significant roles in decarbonisation of our future energy needs and act to
mitigate deleterious impacts of greenhouse gas emissions. Liquid transportation biofuels (bioethanol and
biodiesel) now represent key contributors to the bioenergy portfolios in many countries.
In this research, the growth and metabolic activities of Saccharomyces cerevisiae immobilized in alginate gel during alcoholic fermentation with different initial glucose concentration were studied. Starting from initial glucose concentration at 140 g/L, we observed that increasing this concentration to 220 g/L had little effect on the growth of immobilized yeast. Under the same conditions, the maximum biomass, glucose uptake rate, and final ethanol concentration obtained in the immobilized yeast cultures were always higher than those in the free yeast cultures....
The attitude to alcohol in Britain is ambivalent. On the one hand, it is accepted and welcomed as an integral part of British cultural. The local pubs plays an important role in almost every neighbourhood and pubs, it should be note, are predominantly for the drinking of beer and spirits. The near pub is commonly referred to as" the local" and people who go there often are known as "regulars". The action in both the country's most popular television soaps revolves around a pub.
I do not know what prompted me to apply for the post of Primary Health Care Alcohol Liaison Worker and Counsellor with the Acorn Community Drug and Alcohol Service in Surrey, other than that it somehow felt right. I had not previously
had experience of working with people with alcohol problems. It was late 1994 and I had recently left my job as a Fundholding Manager at a GP surgery in Guildford, having earlier completed my diploma training in person-centred counselling and psychotherapy.
When Prohibition (the Eighteenth Amendment) was repealed by State ratification
of the Twenty-first Amendment in December 1933, I was a teenager, but already
familiar with beverage alcohol. My initial contact was through religion; for centuries
alcohol in beverage form had been part of the customs of many organized religions,
customs that were and are part of the traditions of my Jewish faith. During
Prohibition, I had consumed alcohol in a family environment and also participated
in the sale of alcohol.
In continuation of our reports on the chemical constituents of Croton tonkinensis Gagnep. (Euphorbiaceae) this paper deals with the isolation and structure elucidation of two long chain alkyl alcohols. Two compounds 1 and 2 were isolated by repeated silica gel column chromatography of the n-hexane soluble fraction obtained from the methanol extract of the dried leaves of C. tonkinensis by liquid - liquid fractionation . The long aliphatic chains of both compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by the 1 H and 13 C NMR spectra: H 0.88 (3H, t, J = 6.6 Hz), C 14.
Lecture Organic chemistry - Chapter 8: Alcohols. The main contents of this chapter include all of the following: Ethanol, cyclic alcohols are called cycloalkanols, physical properties, hydrogen bonding, synthesis of alcohols R-OH,...and other contents.
Alcohols are versatile organic compounds since they undergo a wide variety of transformations – the majority of which are either oxidation or reduction type reactions. In this chapter provides knowledge of reactions of alcohols. This chapter presents the following content: Deprotonation, SN1/SN2 via protonation, carbocation rearrangements,...and other contents.
In October 2009, the Institute of Health Economics ( IHE ) staged a consensus
development conference to address key questions about the prevention, diagnosis,
and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder ( FASD ). Experts in the fi eld
presented scientifi c evidence to a “ jury ” about prevention and the social determinants
that may induce drinking during pregnancy, the importance of diagnosis,
the impact of FASD across a person ’ s lifespan, and the community supports
needed for those living with FASD, as well as their families.
This book is the outcome of many years of study. With the exception of a few quotations, none of the material
has ever before appeared in any book. The writer has been indebted for years past to many of the physicians
mentioned in the following pages for copies of pamphlets and magazines, and for newspaper articles, bearing
upon the medical study of alcohol.
A furanolabdane diterpene alcohol was isolated from the rhizomes of the endemic Vietnamese medicinal plant Alpinia tonkinensis Gagnep. (Zingiberaceae). Its absolute stereostructure was established to be (12S)-15,16-epoxy-8(17),13(16),14-labdatrien-12-ol from spectroscopic data and by applying the modified Mosher’s method. It is first report on the natural occurrence and absolute stereochemistry of the diterpene which was previously known as a synthetic intermediate.
Understanding the High-Functioning Alcoholic represents the untold story of millions
of alcoholics. The goal of this book is to allow society to see that alcoholics
all suffer from the same disease, but that it may manifest in different ways.
The homeless person and the high-powered executive can both be alcoholics—
alcoholism does not differentiate among socioeconomic class, education level,
and appearance. However, because the high-functioning alcoholic (HFA) has
the ability to perform and succeed, the treatment often comes too late or not at
This could be fortuitous at modest scales because oxygen is relatively costly (Consonni
and Larson 1994a). However, for the production of methanol from biomass,
the use of air increases the volume of inert (N
) gas that would have to be carried
through all the downstream reactors. Therefore, the use of oxygen thus improves
the economics of synthesis gas processing. Air-fired, directly heated gasifiers are
considered not to be suitable before methanol production.
This gasifier produces a CO
This work addresses a policy initiative by the Federal Administration to apply United States
Department of Energy (DOE) research to broadening the country’s domestic production of
economic, flexible, and secure sources of energy fuels. President Bush stated in his 2006 State of
the Union Address: “America is addicted to oil.
This is the VOA Special English Health Report.
A question from Taiwan: ChungLi
wants to know why his face turns red
when he drinks alcohol.
This effect called facial flushing is a common reaction to alcohol among
East Asians. It affects an estimated thirtysix
percent of Japanese,
Chinese and Koreans. The reaction is also known as "Asian flush" or
