  • We ¯nd that when the hypothetical benchmarks are recognized as being unavailable for investment, there need not exist close substitutes for them in the universe of mutual funds. For an investor who believes completely in the accuracy of the Fama-French model and precludes managerial skill, the perceived maximum Sharpe ratio is only 66 percent of what could be achieved by direct investment in that model's benchmarks. For a believer in the Carhart four-factor model, the corresponding value is 54 percent.

  • As the U.S. Army transforms its combat force, inevitably the institu- tional Army—the “generating force” that fills and sustains the Army’s combat units—must change as well. Stabilizing soldiers at posts and in units demands different personnel and training routines from those that supported the Army’s long-standing “individual replacement” system.

  • Following the original reports of pre-mRNA splicing in 1977, it was quickly realized that splicing together of different combinations of splice sites – alternative splicing– allows individual genes to generate more than one mRNA isoform. The full extent of alternative splicing only began to be revealed once large-scale genome and transcriptome sequencing projects began, rapidly revealing that alternative splicing is the rule rather than the exception.

  • We extend the classical single-task active learning (AL) approach. In the multi-task active learning (MTAL) paradigm, we select examples for several annotation tasks rather than for a single one as usually done in the context of AL. We introduce two MTAL metaprotocols, alternating selection and rank combination, and propose a method to implement them in practice. We experiment with a twotask annotation scenario that includes named entity and syntactic parse tree annotations on three different corpora. ...

  • Pacific sardine fishery off Oregon started in 1935, but there are recorded landings of sardine in Oregon dating back to 1928. The catch dropped off in the 1940’s with 1948 being the last year of directed fishery landings until 1999 when the fishery was revived. Pacific sardine was managed as a developmental fishery from 1999 to 2005. In 2004, the sardine industry asked the Department of Fish and Wildlife to remove Pacific sardines from the developmental species list and create a limited entry system for the fishery.

  • Prior to the availability of refrigeration, foods, particularly fish and meat, were preserved by salting, marinating or pickling. Through a decrease in water activity, meat and fish were protected against microbial spoilage and other deteriorative processes. It was the process of treating meat with rock salt that led to modern curing practices (Cassens 1990). Thus, meat curing, historically defined as the addition of salt (sodium chloride) to meat, is now referred to as the intentional addition of nitrite and salt to meat.

  • Even if socially responsible investment does not impose a cost on SRI fund investors in terms of reduced before-fee financial performance, these investors could still pay an explicit price for their funds' social responsibility in the form of higher fees. Indeed, there are reasons to expect fees charged by SRI funds to be higher. First, some SRI funds actively engage with the firms in which they invest to encourage them to pursue socially responsible policies. The costs of such active monitoring may be partly passed on to investors in the form of higher expenses.

  • We focus on the dynamics of active management skills, and how an investor might optimally choose active funds during varying business conditions. Building on studies such as Avramov and Wermers (2006) and Moskowitz (2000), we allow for the possibility of time-varying mutual fund alphas and betas among active managers in Europe. Following Christopherson, et al. (1998) and Ferson and Schadt (1996), we model such time-variation using a publicly available set of conditioning state variables.

  • For the investor types believing that active managers can generate alphas, we nd that the ability to identify superior performing funds is further improved, albeit slightly, by augmenting the four-factor model with country indices, even if these indices represent non-priced factors, consis- tent with Pastor and Stambaugh (2002a). To illustrate, our baseline analysis nds CAPM alpha enhancements of up to 5% per year from using macroeconomic state variables to choose funds, relative to active manager choice using an unconditional CAPM model.
