  • Algorithms play the central role both in the science and practice of computing. Recognition of this fact has led to the appearance of a considerable number of textbooks on the subject. By and large, they follow one of two alternatives in presenting algorithms. One classifies algorithms according to a problem type. Such a book would have separate chapters on algorithms for sorting, searching, graphs, and so on. The advantage of this approach is that it allows an immediate comparison of, say, the efficiency of different algorithms for the same problem.

  • What do the ¯elds of astronomy, economics, ¯nance, law, mathematics, med- icine, physics, and sociology have in common? Not much in the way of sub- ject matter, that's for sure. And not all that much in the way of methodology. What they do have in common, with each other and with many other ¯elds, is their dependence on a certain standard of rationality.

  • LAMBDA 35 1 2 file = open('myfile.txt', 'w') file.write('hello world') Similarly, you can read back from the file with: 1 2 3 file = open('myfile.txt', 'r') print file.read() hello world Alternatively, you can read in binary mode with "rb", write in binary mode with "wb", and open the file in append mode "a", using standard C notation. The read command takes an optional argument, which is the number of bytes. You can also jump to any location in a file using seek. You can read back from the file with read 1 2 3 print file.seek(6) print file.

  • A grammatical description often applies to a linguistic object only when that object has certain features. Such conditional descriptions can be indirectly modeled in Kay's Functional Unification Grammar (FUG) using functional descriptions that are embedded within disjunctive alternatives. An extension to FUG is proposed that allows for a direct representation of conditional descriptions. This extension has been used to model the input conditions on the systems of systemic grammar. Conditional descriptions are formally defined in terms of logical implication and negation.

  • Kaplan et al (1989) present an approach to machine translation based on co-description. In this paper we show that the notation is not as natural and expressive as it appears. We first show that the most natural analysis proposed in Kaplan et al (1989) cannot in fact cover the range of data for the important translational phenomenon in question. This contribution extends the work reported on in Sadler et al (1989) and Sadler et al (1990). We then go on to discuss alternatives which depart from or extend the formalism proposed in Kaplan et al (1989) in various...

  • We present a notation for the declarative statement of morphological relationships and lexieal rules, based on the traditional notion of Word and Paradigm (cf Hockett 1954). The phenomenon of blocking arises from a generalized version of Kiparsky's (1973) Elsewhere Condition, stated in terms of ordering by subsumption over paradigms. Orthographic constraints on morphemic alternation are described by means of string equations (Siekmann 1975).
