  • We establish three identities involving Dyck paths and alternating Motzkin paths, whose proofs are based on variants of the same bijection. We interpret these identities in terms of closed random walks on the halfline. We explain how these identities arise from combinatorial interpretations of certain properties of the -Hermite and -Laguerre ensembles of random matrix theory. We conclude by presenting two other identities obtained in the same way, for which finding combinatorial proofs is an open problem....

  • The integration of sophisticated inference-based techniques into natural language processing applications first requires a reliable method of encoding the predicate-argument structure of the propositional content of text. Recent statistical approaches to automated predicateargument annotation have utilized parse tree paths as predictive features, which encode the path between a verb predicate and a node in the parse tree that governs its argument.

  • REDUNDANCY, SPARES, AND REPAIRS This chapter deals with a variety of techniques for improving system reliability and availability. Underlying all these techniques is the basic concept of redundancy, providing alternate paths to allow the system to continue operation even when some components fail. Alternate paths can be provided by parallel components (or systems). The parallel elements can all be continuously operated, in which case all elements are powered up and the term parallel redundancy or hot standby is often used....

  • Which two statements are true of EIGRP topology depth? (Choose two.) Topology depth should be limited to 15 routers. Redundant links and alternative paths can be used to reduce topology depth. Topology depth is the maximum hop count between any two EIGRP routers in the topology. Route summarization can reduce the convergence time in networks with large depth. Topology depth is the number of router hops necessary for traffic to reach from access layer to core layer. Topology depth refers to the total number of hops that information must travel to reach all EIGRP routers in the network....

  • Transport diversity is a general terminology used for selecting or preferring a network exit-point for end-user application traffic across network topologies that have a variety of characteristics. These characteristics include things like monetary cost, reliability or availability, availability of bandwidth, and latency. One example of transport diversity is a branch office environment that has a primary path using Frame Relay and a backup or alternate path using basic rate ISDN.

  • An exception is termed as an abnormal condition encountered by an application during execution. Exception handling is the process of providing an alternative path of execution when the application is unable to execute as desired. This chapter describes exceptions. It explains how to implement the try, catch, and finally blocks. In addition, it also discusses the implementation of user-defined exceptions.

  • The Bank, IMF and World Bank participated in a Government Forum organized in March 2011 to discuss the recently approved Strategy for Arrears Clearance. A major conclusion from the workshop was the importance of reaching agreement on a Staff Monitored Program with the IMF as a critical component of the path towards arrears clearance and debt relief and a grandfathering of Zimbabwe by the IDA Executive Board if it is to benefit from the HIPC Initiative.

  • After researching literature on addiction and film, I chose the films for the study and viewed each one many times, specifically looking for socioeconomic representations of characters, treatment of different races, sexes, and sexual preferences, methods of production as they relate to addicted characters and drug usage, and the depiction of treatment/ self-help groups. I then outlined the narrative of each film and compared the uses and meanings brought to addicts, addiction, and substances. I found that these movies construct a fairly unified image of treatment.

  • Finally, the review in its concluding chapter looked at the future of so- cial funds. Broadly, three alternative paths were considered: The first was to focus on the question of transition. Because social funds are strong at demonstrating good practices and good governance, they can be im- portant in drawing best practices from other sectors. For example, there are some best practices in the water and sanitation and in the rural trans- port sectors. More experiences need to be exchanged outside social funds with some of the better programs in other sectors.

  • Obstacles to serving the common good come in many forms —lack of rule of law, corruption, tendencies towards greed, poor stewardship of resources—but the most significant for a business leader on a personal level is leading a “divided” life. This split between faith and daily business practice can lead to imbalances and misplaced devotion to worldly success.

  • Several bacteria, including Azotobacter vinelandii, possess an alternative pathway ofl-rhamnose metabolism, which is different from the known bacterial pathway. In a previous article, a gene cluster related to this path-way was identified, consisting of the genes encoding the four metabolic enzymes l-rhamnose-1-dehydrogenase (LRA1), l-rhamnono-c-lactonase (LRA2),

  • Martin J. Henn's Parmenides of Elea offers to the reader a reinvigorating verse translation of the Diels and Kranz B-Fragments of Parmenides cast in rhyming couplet iambic pentameter. Placing Parmenides in his proper historical context by taking seriously the impact of Persian Zoroastrianism on his developing monism, Henn supplies precise interpretation of the most difficult and vexing of Parmenides's fragments, while also providing reliable philosophical analysis of the many seeming contradictions latent in the text.

  • At the same time, it can hardly be the case that the market profile is the only path for interest rates which might bring inflation broadly to its target over the next two to three years. Intuitively one might expect that an earlier rise in interest rates could also deliver the target in early 2014. Equally the first increase could be delayed. We cannot know what would actually be needed but we could, in principle, use economic models to explore alternative paths. There is, however, a substantial obstacle to doing this in any convincing way....

  • Promotion and separation from military service have been intertwined for the entire history of the officer corps of the United States, but cause and effect have changed over time. Aside from periods of downsizing, the separation of some officers has always led to the promotion of others. Through World War II involuntary separation for age and tenure was seldom mandatory and promotion was based on seniority. As a result promotio

  • Chapter content summary: EIGRP is a classless routing protocol that supports VLSM; path selection is based upon several factors; EIGRP keeps a next-best alternative path, called a feasible successor, for fast convergence; EIGRP supports unequal-cost load balancing; EIGRP uses MD5 authentication for router authenticity; troubleshooting EIGRP requires resolving link, neighbor, redistribution, and routing issues.

  • At that time, evolutionary biology was in eclipse. Many scientists thought that Lord Kelvin’s arguments about the rate of the earth’s cooling proved Darwin wrong (Kelvin 1862). Others recognized that Darwin’s theory of transmission by gemmules was inconsistent with his theory of natural selection (Richards 1987). Natural selection was not re-incorporated into biology until its underpinnings in population genetics were developed in the early to middle years of the 20th century (Fisher 1930).

  • Alternative, far more complete, frameworks have been proposed (e.g., Tobin and De Macedo (1980) and Branson and Henderson (1985)) which describe worlds in which mutual trading of assets between two countries take place. But while these were path-breaking studies, neither described the sequential processes which would bring about a state of equilibrium. Much more complex, yet parsimonious, models have been proposed by Godley (1999), Godley and Lavoie (2004) and Taylor (2004), which extended the earlier models by Tobin et al referred to above.
