The discovery that signaling by the epidermal growth factor receptor
(EGFR) plays a key role in tumorigenesis prompted efforts to target this
receptor in anticancer therapy. Two different types of EGFR-targeted ther-apeutic agents were subsequently developed: mAbs, such as cetuximab and
panitumumab, which target the extracellular domain of the receptor,

The anticancer agents cisplatin and oxaliplatin are widely used in the treat-ment of human neoplasias. A genome-wide screen inSaccharomyces cere-visiae previously identified PPH3and PSY2among the top 20 genes
conferring resistance to these anticancer agents. The mammalian ortho-logue of Pph3p is the protein serine⁄threonine phosphatase Ppp4c, which is
found in high molecular mass complexes bound to a regulatory subunit
A series of alpha-substituted 2’,5’-dihydroxychalcones bearing a cyanide, bromine, or methyl group at alpha-position were synthesized and evaluated for in vitro cytotoxicity against three cancer cell lines, including B16, murine melanoma, HCT116 (colon cancer), A431 (human epidermoid carcinoma), and HUVEC (human umbilical venous endothelial cell). The synthesized chalcones showed significant cytotoxicity against most of cell lines, with IC50 values ranging from 0.97 to 10 µg/mL.
Pyrimidine biosynthesis enzymes function in many cellular processes and
are closely associated with pyrimidine antagonists used in cancer chemo-therapy. These enzymes are well characterized from bacteria to mammals,
but not in a simple metazoan. To study the pyrimidine biosynthesis path-way inCaenorhabditis elegans, we screened for mutants exhibiting resis-tance to the anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU).
Saporin is a type I ribosome-inactivating protein that is often appended
with a cell-binding domain to specifically target and kill cancer cells. Uroki-nase plasminogen activator (uPA)-saporin, for example, is an anticancer
toxin that consists of a chemical conjugate between the human uPA and
A large number of bioactive peptides have been isolated
from amphibian skin secretions. These peptides have a
variety of actions including antibiotic and anticancer acti-vities and the inhibition of neuronal nitric oxide synthase.
We have investigated the structure–activity relationship of
citropin 1.1, a broad-spectrum antibiotic and anticancer
agent that also causes inhibition of neuronal nitric oxide
synthase, by making a number of synthetically modified
Engineering and Food for the third millenniumthat is compliant with the requirements
of globalization and new technologies, is one of the most significant additions to the
Food Preservation Technology Series. This bookis the result of a tremendous effort by
the authors, the publisher and editors to put together, as never before, a comprehensive
overview on what is current in food engineering.
In the book "Chemometrics in practical applications", various practical applications of chemometric methods in chemistry, biochemistry and chemical technology are presented, and selected chemometric methods are described in tutorial style. The book contains 14 independent chapters and is devoted to filling the gap between textbooks on multivariate data analysis and research journals on chemometrics and chemoinformatics.
It is my privilege to introduce this Handbook on Advanced Cancer Care,
which belongs to a series of publications initiated by the European Society
for Medical Oncology (ESMO). There is a great need, especially for medical
oncologists, to have a comprehensive overview of the essential elements
needed for the care of patients with advanced cancer. This handbook fulfills
The Handbook on Advanced Cancer Care provides useful definitions and
surveys of treatment principles.
Preparations derived from Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegl. mycelium are worldwide used as dietary supplements
containing compounds active as immune system enhancers, demonstrating chemopreventive and
anticancer activity. L. edodes mycelium enriched with organic forms of selenium like selenized yeast possess
putative, higher cancer preventive properties. The objective of this study was to test the effect of
enrichment in selenium on antioxidant, reducing and free radical scavenging activity of water and alcohol
extracts from mycelium of L. edodes (Berk.).
Today, cancer research is focused on determining how genome and proteome level
information may be useful as tools in prevention, diagnosis, and prognosis. The
development of “omics” technologies, such as proteomics and transcriptomics has
opened new research areas for scientists working on cancer research.
All berries are low in sugar and high in fiber. Blueberries have been shown to increase memory in lab
studies, and raspberries and strawberries are loaded with ellagic acid, a powerful antioxidant that seems
to have some anticancer properties, according to the American Cancer Society.
Polysaccharide fractions isolated from Lentinula edodes fruitbodies
and mycelium demonstrate strong immunomodulating,
antioxidant and anticancer activity. We hypothesized, that
polysaccharide fractions enriched in selenium would possess
higher biological activity than non-enriched fractions, currently
used to treat cancer. The first goal of this study was to isolate
selenium (Se)-enriched polysaccharide fractions of different
molecular weight from L. edodes mycelium cultivated under the
submerged conditions in Se-enriched medium, and to investigate
their monosaccharide composition....
