Sri Krishnadevaraya University organized a National Symposium on Science in
'21 si century' and Annual convention of Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences during
February, 2008. About 100 delegates participated in the symposium. The present
book is a collection of some of the papers presented during the symposium. Only
some authors have responded to our invitation. Apart from the symposium articles a
few invited articles have also been included in the book.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in industrialized countries but
efficacious stroke treatment is still an unmet need. Preclinical research indi-cates that different molecules afford protection from ischemic neurodegen-eration, but all clinical trials conducted so far have inexorably failed.
This literature review provides strong evidence that playing is central to children’s physical,
psychological and social well-being. Whilst playing, children can experience real emotions,
create their own uncertainty, experience the unexpected, respond to new situations
and adapt to a wide variety of situations. Play enables children to form friendships and
attachments to adults and to places, allowing for the development of familiarity and intimacy

Streptococcus pneumoniaeis one of the major pathogens worldwide. The
use of currently available antibiotics to treat pneumococcal diseases is ham-pered by increasing resistance levels; also, capsular polysaccharide-based
vaccination is of limited efficacy. Therefore, it is desirable to find targets
for the development of new antimicrobial drugs specifically designed to
fight pneumococcal infections.
