  • Some years ago in one of those all too rare moments of reflection it occurred to me that I was only three lifetimes away from the very beginnings of modern psychology. It is generally agreed, as we will see, that what we call "scientific psychology" began with Wundt's laboratory at Leipzig around 1879. Similarly, applied psychology is seen to have begun with the work of Francis Galton in England at about the same time. A short time later James McKeen Cattell, one of Wundfs first American students received his Ph.D. at Leipzig and went on to work briefly with Galton.

  • That every idea in consciousness is energizing and carries with it an impulse to some kind of muscular activity is a comparatively new but well-settled principle of psychology. • Industrial psychology began almost as soon as psychology had developed enough of a science for it to be applied to industry. As early as the 1890s, Hugo Munsterberg, the German American psychologist, was involved with the selection of street car operators (cf. Koppes, 2007), and by the 1920s, business applications of psychology in employee selection, advertising, and organizational design were thriving. Industrial psychology was one of the four original specialties of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) in 1947.

  • Most people take the process of coping for granted as they go about their daily activities. In many ways, coping is like breathing, an automatic process requiring no apparent effort. However, when people face truly threatening events--what psychologists call stressors--they become acutely aware of the coping process and respond by consciously applying their day-to-day coping skills. Coping is a fundamental psychological process, and people's skills are commensurately sophisticated. This volume builds on people's strengths and emphasizes their role as positive copers.

  • One of the benefits of applying to clinical and counseling psychology programs is that you earn the right to commiserate about it afterwards. It was a night of anecdotes and complaints (while doing laundry) that led us to review our travails and compare notes on the difficulties we each experienced during the admission process. We emerged from three diverse backgrounds: one of us (T.J.M.) graduated from a large state university, took time off, and then entered a doctoral program; one of us (M.A.S.

  • Nature compels us all to move through life. We could not remain stationary however much we wished. Every right-thinking person wants not merely to move through life like a sound-producing, perambulating plant, but to develop – to improve – and to continue the development mentally to the close of physical life. This development can occur only through the improvement of the quality of individual thought and the ideals, actions and conditions that arise as a consequence. Hence a study of the creative processes of thought and how to apply them is of supreme importance to each one of us.

  • Economic thinking is all about making difficult choices. Critical economic thinking is all about being aware of how you think about economic issues so that you can make the best decisions possible. All of us engage in economic thinking whether it is shopping for ourselves, making business decisions that affect our fellow workers, or deciding on government policies that affect the entire nation. Of course such decision making is not done solely from an economic perspective. Shopping decisions are affected by a variety of cultural influences.
