  • Ubiquitous learning and foreign language learning in listening Ubiquitous learning enables learners to learn in their daily life and helps them to overcome limitations of time and space. Learners who study a foreign language with mobile devices will be able to experience learning from an authentic situation and have their learning performance enhanced (Nash, 2007), as multiple sense stimuli may be more helpful to learners in absorbing knowledge. So far, ubiquitous learning has been implemented in many types ...

  • A new account of parameter setting during grammatical acquisition is presented in terms of Generalized Categorial G r a m m a r embedded in a default inheritance hierarchy, providing a natural partial ordering on the setting of parameters. Experiments show that several experimentally effective learners can be defined in this framework. Ew)lutionary simulations suggest that a lea.rner with default initial settings for parameters will emerge, provided that learning is memory limited and the environment of linguistic adaptation contains an appropriate language. ...

  • Logic programming, an important new method of compute programming resulting from recent research in artifucial intelligence and computer science, has proved to be especially appropriate for solving problems in natrual-language processing. "Prolog and Natural Language Analysis" provides a concise and practical introduction to logic programming and the logic-programming language Prolog both as vehicles for understanding elementary computational linguistics and as tools for implementing the basic components of natural-language-processing systems....

  • Ebook Use It! Don't Lose It! - Language daily skills practice Grade 8 helps your students use their skills, so they won't lose them. There are five problems a day, every day for 36 weeks. The practice activities are set up in a spiraling scope and sequence so that students practice skills at regular intervals. Each week's problems are based on a grade-level appropriate topic so every time a skill shows up, it has a new context requiring students to dig into their memories, recall what they know, and apply it to a new situation.

  • The main source of data for this study was essays written in the DET about two weeks before the semester started (time 1) and in week 11 (time 2). Two levels of analysis were conducted, holistic and analytic. The holistic analysis was mainly based on the bands the participating students obtained at time 1 and time 2. This level of analysis aims mainly to ascertain whether students’ academic writing competence has improved purely in numerical terms.

  • The accession into the World Trade Organization assisting Vietnam in integrating further into the global trading system since 2006 has required Vietnamese learners who major in Business English to acquire effective language skills in this area to succeed in either the increasingly demanding domestic market or the international commerce. Hence, the study aims at investigating necessary BE speaking sub skills for Vietnamese businessmen through a survey questionnaire answered by selected sales personnel in import-export companies in Hanoi. ...

  • Authorities for Transaction and Payment approval should understand that the authority carries responsibility and that they are accountable for their actions. They are free to investigate as necessary to satisfy themselves that transaction and payment approval is correct and appropriate. It is also understood that if they cannot accept full responsibility, the items should be passed to a higher level for approval.

  • This paper describes Read-X, a system designed to identify text that is appropriate for the reader given his thematic choices and the reading ability associated with his educational background. To our knowledge, Read-X is the first web-based system that performs real-time searches and returns results classified thematically and by reading level within seconds.

  • Writing in English might be one of the most difficult tasks for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners. This paper presents FLOW, a writing assistance system. It is built based on first-language-oriented input function and context sensitive approach, aiming at providing immediate and appropriate suggestions including translations, paraphrases, and n-grams during composing and revising processes.

  • Reading proficiency is a fundamental component of language competency. However, finding topical texts at an appropriate reading level for foreign and second language learners is a challenge for teachers. This task can be addressed with natural language processing technology to assess reading level. Existing measures of reading level are not well suited to this task, but previous work and our own pilot experiments have shown the benefit of using statistical language models.

  • Electronic media, particularly television, have long been criticized for their potential impact on children. One area for concern is how early media exposure influences cognitive development and academic achievement. Heather Kirkorian, Ellen Wartella, and Daniel Anderson summa- rize the relevant research and provide suggestions for maximizing the positive effects of media and minimizing the negative effects. One focus of the authors is the seemingly unique effect of television on children under age two.

  • To give appropriate translation equivalents for target words is one of the most fundamental problems in machine translation systrms. Especially, when the MT systems handle languages that have completely different structures like Japanese and European languages as source and target languages. In this report, we discuss about the data strucutre that enables appropriate selections of translation equivalents for verbs in the target language. This structure is based on the concepts strucutre with associated information relating source and target languages.

  • Reading is known to be an essential task in language learning, but finding the appropriate text for every learner is far from easy. In this context, automatic procedures can support the teacher’s work. Some tools exist for English, but at present there are none for French as a foreign language (FFL). In this paper, we present an original approach to assessing the readability of FFL texts using NLP techniques and extracts from FFL textbooks as our corpus. Two logistic regression models based on lexical and grammatical features are explored and give quite good predictions on new texts. ...

  • In this document, we present a language which associates type construction principles to constraint logic programming. We show that it is very appropriate for language processing, providing more uniform, expressive and efficient tools and treatments. We introduce three kinds of constraints, that we exemplify by motivational examples. Finally, we give the procedural semantics of our language, combining type construction with SLDresolution.

  • Unification is often the appropriate method for expressing relations between representations in the form of feature structures; however, there are circumstances in which a different approach is desirable. A declarative formalism is presented which permits direct mappings of one feature structure into another, and illustrative examples are given of its application to areas of current interest.

  • A "Front End" for a Computer-Based Glaucoma Consultation System is described. The system views a case as a description of a particular instance of a class of concepts called "structured objects" and builds up a representation of the instance from the sentences in the case. The information required by the consultation system is then extracted and passed on to the consultation system in the appropriately coded form.

  • Our goal is to improve the contextual appropriateness of spoken output in a dialogue system. We explore the use of the information state to determine the information structure of system utterances. We concentrate on the realization of information structure by intonation. We present the results of evaluating the contextual appropriateness of varied system output produced with a text-to-speech synthesis system that supports intonation annotation.
