  • The research effort on which this book is based has involved continuous analyses of various river–estuarine and coastal systems in the southeastern United States since 1970. These long-term studies have been carried out using a combination of field descriptive and experimental (lab and field) approaches.

  • Natural systems for the treatment and management of municipal and industrial wastewaters and residuals feature processes that use minimal energy and minimal or no chemicals, and they produce relatively lower amounts of residual solids. This book is intended for the practicing engineers and scientists who are involved in the planning, design, construction, evaluation, and operation of wastewater management facilities.

  • Fish are aquatic vertebrates with fins for appendages. They "breathe" by means of gills. Fish make up the largest of the vertebrate groups with over 20,000 species. They can be found in a great variety of lakes, streams, oceans and estuaries. Fish are divided into two groups based on the composition of their skeletons. The sharks, skates and rays are cartilaginous fish. Their skeletons are made of cartilage, the same flexible material in your ear lobes and nose. The majority of fish have skeletons made of bone and are called bony fish....

  • Pesticides in the Hydrologic System is a series of comprehensive reviews and analyses of our current knowledge and understanding of pesticides in the water resources of the United States and of the principal factors that influence contamination and transport. The series is presented according to major components of the hydrologic system—the atmosphere, surface water, bed sediments and aquatic organisms, and ground water.

  • chapter 10 Kissimmee–Okeechobee–Florida Everglades–Florida Bay–Coral Reef System 10.1 The System The Kissimmee–Okeechobee–Florida Everglades–Florida Bay–coral reef (KOEFR) system, located in central and south Florida, is among the most unique ecological resources in the United States. This system formed over thousands of years as a major wetland represented by the Kissimmee River vegetation, the Florida Everglades, the Big Cypress Swamp, and the coastal mangroves and glades (Mitsch and Gosselink, 1993).

  • Taking military barracks wastewater treatment as an example, this paper presents a new concept design of a modified DEWATS system with both the horizontal subsurface constructed wetland and aquatic plants pond. Results show that this process in treating the military barracks area wastewater have many advantages such as low operation cost, simple operation and maintenance, and the effluent could meet "the urban wastewater treatment plant pollutant discharge standard" for first level Class A.

  • Wetland can be understood as an ecological system lie on a continuum between uplands, where excessive water is not a factor for plant growth, and deeply flooded lands, or aquatic systems, where flooding excludes rooted emergent vegetation. Figure 1 shows how to describe this wetland concept

  • Human activities may seriously affect the quality of aquatic ecosystems. Pathogen organisms, nutrients, heavy metals, toxic elements, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and various other organic micropollutants enter to aquatic environment through a range of point and diffuse sources. The presence of these compounds has adverse impacts on aquatic biota. It is well recognised that the distribution and the abundance of various species in aquatic systems are directly related to the water quality and hydrological conditions....

  • The state of aquatic ecosystems reflects the general state of the biosphere. The situation in the biosphere affected by anthropogenic factors was characterized as “a slow explosion” (Fedorov 1987). The global change in the biosphere and climatic system of the Earth is a manifestation of this “slow explosion” (World Resources 1990–1991, Izrael et al. 1992).

  • The long-term approach to achieving protection is “ecological separation.” A true ecological separation is defined as no inter-basin transfer of aquatic organisms via the Chicago Waterway System at any time – 100% effectiveness. Ecological separation prohibits the movement or interbasin transfer of aquatic organisms between the Mississippi and Great Lakes basins via the CWS. Once established, the impacts of invasive species on ecosystem health are permanent and irreversible.

  • The contamination of metals is a major environmental problem and especially in the aquatic environment. Some metals are potentially toxic or carcinogenic even at very low concentration and are thus, hazardous to human if they enter the food chain. Metals are usually dissolved into the aquatic system through natural or anthropogenic sources. Metal ions are distributed thoroughly during their transport in different compartments of the aquatic ecosystems, in biotic or abiotic compartment such as fishes, water, sediment, plant.

  • Picocyanobacteria are a diverse and widespread group of photosynthetic prokaryotes and belong to the main group of primary producers (Castenholz & Waterbury. 1989; Rippka, 1988). Picoeukaryotes, meanwhile, are a diverse group that is widely distributed in the marine environment, and they have a fundamental role in aquatic ecosystems because of their high productivity. Like bacteria, marine viruses are thought to play important roles in global and small-scale biogeochemical cycling.

  • Metal in sediment is affected by mineralogical and chemical composition of suspended material, anthropogenic influences by deposition, sorption, and enrichment in living organism or aquatic plant (Jain et al., 2005). Naturally, suspended and bed sediment are an important compartment to buffer metal concentration in an aquatic system especially by adsorption or precipitation (Jain & Ali, 2000; Jain, 2001; Jain & Sharma, 2002; Jain et al., 2004).
