  • The red mud wasted from the Guinean bauxite refinery was studied for phosphate removal from model aqueous solutions of potassium orthophosphate (OPh) and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPPh). The red mud has been treated with concentrated sulphuric acid. After filtration of the acid suspension, the activated mud was washed (pH 7), dried and ground to powder.

  • Abstract Use of red mud, which is a waste product from bauxite processing, has been explored as an alternate adsorbent for arsenic in this study. The tests showed that the alkaline aqueous medium (pH 9.5) favored the removal of As(III), whereas the pH range from 1.1 to 3.2 was e€ective for As(V) removal. The process of arsenic adsorption follows a ®rst-order rate expression and obeys the Langmuir's model. It was found that the adsorption of As(III) was exothermic, whereas As(V) adsorption was endothermic. ...

  • Amines are extremely important intermediates and end products of the chemical industry and are often obtained by hydrogenation of the corresponding nitro compounds or imines. A search of the literature reveals, that hydrogenation of nitro compounds catalyzed by well-defined molecular complexes in aqueous solutions is rare.

  • Introduction: Modern research on nonaqueous batteries is focusing on lithium-based systems, which require electrolyte solutions stable in the presence of metallic lithium and other anodes such as LiC6, which have potentials very close to the Li/Liþ reversible potential. For this reason, this article reviews the state-of-the-art of aprotic solvents, and reviews on protic solvents such as alcohols can be found in Further Reading.

  • Groundwater remediation by nanoparticles has become a major interest in recent years. This report presents the ability of hexavalent chromium removal in aqueous using iron (Fe0) nanoparticles. Cr(VI) is a major pollution of groundwater and more toxic than Cr(III). Fe0 reduces Cr(VI), transforming Cr(VI) to nontoxic Cr(III). At a dose of 0.2g/l iron (Feo) nanoparticles, 100% of Cr(VI) 5mg/l was removed after only 20 minutes. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency increased with decreasing initial pH.

  • The solubility of a partially soluble salt is decreased when a common ion is added. Consider the equilibrium established when acetic acid, HC2H3O2, is added to water. At equilibrium H+ and C2H3O2- are constantly moving into and out of solution, but the concentrations of ions is constant and equal. If a common ion is added, e.g. C2H3O2- from NaC2H3O2 (which is a strong electrolyte) then [C2H3O2-] increases and the system is no longer at equilibrium. So, [H+] must decrease.

  • The solution structure of a synthetic mutant type I antifreeze protein (AFP I) was determined in aqueous solution at pH 7.0 using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The mutations comprised the replacement of the four Thr residues by Val and the introduction of two additional Lys-Glu salt bridges. The antifreeze activity of this mutant peptide, VVVV2KE, has been previously shown to be similar to that of the wild type protein, HPLC6 (defined here as TTTT).

  • Conformational studies on amyloidb peptide (Ab) in aqueous solution are complicated by its tendency to aggregate. In this study, we determined the atomic-level structure of Ab28)42 in an aqueous environment. We fused fragments of Ab, residues 10–24 (Ab10)24) or 28–42 (Ab28)42), to three positions in the C-terminal region of ribonuclease HII from a hyper-thermophile, Thermococcus kodakaraensis(Tk-RNase HII).

  • The high-resolution 3D structure of the octapeptide hor-mone angiotensin II (AII) in aqueous solution has been obtained bysimulated annealing calculations, using high-resolutionNMR-derived restraints. After final refinement in explicit water, a familyof 13 structures was obtained with a backbone RMSD of 0.73 ± 0.23 A˚ . AII adopts a fairly compact folded structure, with its C-terminus and N-ter-minus approaching towithin7.2 A ˚ of eachother.

  • Introduction: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a colorless gas with the smell of putrid eggs; it can exist in both nonionic and ionic forms in aqueous solution. The ratio of the nonionic form to the total ionized one is influenced by concentration of hydrogen ion in the solution. Under acidic conditions, H2S does not ionized and evaporated from water; under alkaline conditions it is easily ionized and retained in the solution.

  • The metastable state of liquids which are supercooled has been the subject of interest for over 300 years. Supercooled water and aqueous solutions are found in the atmosphere, in cold-hardy organisms, and in many industrial applications. For example, freeze tolerance and the associated avoidance of supercooling, is the dominant cold-related strategy in Southern Hemisphere insects, being found in 77% of cold hardy insects. In industry, thermodynamic systems such as cool boxes have a significant financial driving force for supercooling to be controlled and this is also covered in this book...
