  • The red mud wasted from the Guinean bauxite refinery was studied for phosphate removal from model aqueous solutions of potassium orthophosphate (OPh) and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPPh). The red mud has been treated with concentrated sulphuric acid. After filtration of the acid suspension, the activated mud was washed (pH 7), dried and ground to powder.

  • Abstract Use of red mud, which is a waste product from bauxite processing, has been explored as an alternate adsorbent for arsenic in this study. The tests showed that the alkaline aqueous medium (pH 9.5) favored the removal of As(III), whereas the pH range from 1.1 to 3.2 was e€ective for As(V) removal. The process of arsenic adsorption follows a ®rst-order rate expression and obeys the Langmuir's model.   • Groundwater remediation by nanoparticles has become a major interest in recent years. This report presents the ability of hexavalent chromium removal in aqueous using iron (Fe0) nanoparticles. Cr(VI) is a major pollution of groundwater and more toxic than Cr(III). Fe0 reduces Cr(VI), transforming Cr(VI) to nontoxic Cr(III). At a dose of 0.2g/l iron (Feo) nanoparticles, 100% of Cr(VI) 5mg/l was removed after only 20 minutes. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency increased with decreasing initial pH.

  • The solubility of a partially soluble salt is decreased when a common ion is added. Consider the equilibrium established when acetic acid, HC2H3O2, is added to water. At equilibrium H+ and C2H3O2- are constantly moving into and out of solution, but the concentrations of ions is constant and equal. If a common ion is added, e.g. C2H3O2- from NaC2H3O2 (which is a strong electrolyte) then [C2H3O2-] increases and the system is no longer at equilibrium. So, [H+] must decrease.

  • The solution structure of a synthetic mutant type I antifreeze protein (AFP I) was determined in aqueous solution at pH 7.0 using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The mutations comprised the replacement of the four Thr residues by Val and the introduction of two additional Lys-Glu salt bridges. The antifreeze activity of this mutant peptide, VVVV2KE, has been previously shown to be similar to that of the wild type protein, HPLC6 (defined here as TTTT).
