In his opening address to the conference, Jon wood, who coordinates the
research programme at the Institute, traced the origins of the conference to a
series of exploratory conversations on the relationship between archaeology
and contemporary art with independent curator Katy rochester. From the
outset, wood, rochester and their colleagues in leeds sought proposals from
archaeologists who were interested in sculpture and in sharing new ideas
with sculpture historians.
The contributors to the conference comprised a mixture of art historians,
curators, museum studies lecturers, anthropologists, archaeologists and
artists, and the conference timetable positioned established academics
alongside scholars at an earlier stage in their research and writing careers.

About Mullen: Stanley Mullen (June 20, 1911 – 1973) was an American artist, short story writer, novelist and publisher. He studied writing at the University of Colorado at Boulder and drawing, painting and lithography at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center where he was accepted as a professional member in 1937. A series of his paintings of Indian ceremonial dances is part of the permanent collection of the Denver Art Museum. Mullen worked as assistant curator of the Colorado State Historical Museum during the 1940s. Mullen wrote over 200 stories and articles in a variety of fields.
One of Wall’s theses is that the fusion of art and non-art is in a
sense an illusion, a mimetic operation that leaves the institutional
art context fully intact. Non-artistic phenomena, including various
forms of economic and social activity, make their ‘second appear-
ance’ in, or rather as, art. Artists and curators appropriate these
activities without actually having to leave the institutional domain

Thomas Bewick has been acclaimed as the pioneer of modern wood engraving whose genius brought this popular medium to prominence. This study shows that certain technological developments prepared a path for Bewick and helped give his work its unique character.
