Many thanks to Shahin for this amazing tutorial.
I paint digitally as if I use traditional tools. First I use a sketch tool in Painter program (mainly charcoal and chalk or pen and ink), and block in the tones and create a monochrome drawing then I used it as a base for my painting. Next step I create new layers and build up color tones. For Digital painting you need hardware facilities and related softwares.
Introduction I have introduced the Hair drawing tutorial so far, where I focused on some drawing techniques to achieve realistic hair look in a portrait. This time the tutorial is rather about drawing the whole portrait with all its parts enriched with useful tips. The tutorial aims at those of you, who are beginners or intermediate in drawing portraits and don't want to spend money for expensive artistic stuff. You need about four cheap pencils, charcoal, tissue or tortillion for blending, smudging eraser and ordinary eraser.
Many thanks to Lianne Issa for this amazing tutorial. Check out her portraits gallery. Circulism Technique The colored pencil technique called circulism was invented in 1992 by Maggie Toole and i use it in all of my close up graphite portraits to try and achieve a realistic skin texture.
The idea behind circulism is that when shading you draw no lines at all rather, the technique uses varied, unending, overlapped and intertwined circles, building transparent layers.
This tutorial is very detailed, and involves a lot of patience. My drawings take a long time, and my greatest skill is not my drawing ability but my patience, as I have told a lot of deviants. By instructing you on how I do everything, I am giving you the opportunity to focus mainly on developing your patience. I've tried to use my own drawings as examples, when I can, and give useful links. Links to shopping websites are only given as an example of what to look for and average price, but not necessarily the best place to...
Art Composition can be summed up in one statement from the man who literally wrote the book that most professional illustrators behold as the holy grail of illustration. "The Principle of overlapping areas, forms and contours is the basis of all pictorial creation. Since line is our first means of defining these then linear arrangement becomes our first consideration." - Andrew Loomis After reading this, art composition should become a little clearer. In its most basic form, composition is the arrangement of line. Since line makes up everything, then this naturally makes sense.
Many thanks to Lianne Issa for this amazing tutorial. Check out her portraits gallery. Ok so here is my first tutorial, i'm not that good at explaining things but if i can post my Wips (works in progress) of an eye with a brief description this may help you see the way i do things. I am going to attempt to draw the very beautiful eye of Angelina Jolie
This is a simple quick tutorial that I have done and others might find useful in coloured pencils of how to make eyes look realistic.
Figure 1: Image reference of a pair of eyes from the “Nat west” magazine cover (that I scanned.) Step 1 : Outline
Figure 2: Basic outline of the eyes drawn on A4 paper with border around it. Step 2 : Work in progress
Introduction Drawing hair is definitely one of the trickiest part of almost every portrait. However, you will definitely like it if you acquire technique and skill in it. Therefore I introduce some easy and effective ways to draw wavy or straight hair or hair blowing in the wind. No matter how much chaotic the hair is, you'll be able to draw it. This tutorial explains two techniques of drawing hair on four portraits. I laid emphasis on minimum of drawing equipment. You need just pencil, charcoal and rubber eraser. ...

The art of watercolor involves a great many techniques. One I follow is called the "direct method" and is achieved by attempting to paint accurate color values and shapes in the first stages of the painting process. Of course, adjustments will be made in some areas before the work is completed. Even so, the "direct method" saves a great deal of time and allows the colors to glow with freshness.
Pencil Sketch The first step to success is to choose fine source material. I choose one of my own photographs that has good color and composition. Having taken the photo,...
There has been a growing fascination over the past
century with the emotional and psychological aspects of
children’s art expressions, particularly from the fields of
psychology, psychiatry, and art therapy. Drawing has
been undeniably recognized as one of the most important
ways that children express themselves and has been
repeatedly linked to the expression of personality and
emotions. Children’s drawings are thought to reflect their
inner worlds, depicting various feelings and relating
information concerning psychological status and
I know when I learn to do something for the first time that it helps if I can actually interact and "do" the activity at hand. Nothing could be truer then when learning to draw, especially when learning how to draw a face. If you just start drawing the eyes, a mouth, and a nose, you may come up with a pretty decent portrait; then again you may come out with something that looks like an abstract drawing. You might even come up with something that will change the shape of the modern art world. Even if that does...
Step 1 Firstly just draw the basic outlines and mark the parts in which you want to shade and keep in mind about the light shades and all.
Step 2 After you are done with basic outlines and single lined drawings, Start shading the parts with small and light stokes using any number of pencil varrying according to you if you want dark portrait use 4B pencils to 9B and if you want to use lighter tones use HB pencil to 3B pencil. Then start smudging using a piece of cloth or
Let's face it. Sometimes learning the basic techniques of drawing and art can seem boring. Just like in any skill or trade, there are moments and subjects that you would rather glaze over. Creative drawing is most likely not one of those subjects. Learning art philosophy and color theory sounds like taking courses where you're in an old dust-covered room with a teacher just reading through a textbook and putting everyone to sleep. The movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" comes to mind. When I think of creative drawing, I think of the part where Ferris and his friends go...
A Great Sketch Results in a Great Painting How to use the Grid Method to Achieve Accurate Shape and Perspective in Art Failure to achieve accurate shape and perspective in a finished work of art is why many of us give-up and declare ourselves "non-artists." There's nothing worse for a student's artistic selfconfidence than having a painting of a horse turn-out looking more like a dog. Yet there is a simple method of ensuring that the finished work will have proper shape and perspective. Artists dating back to the ancient Egyptians knew of a technique to break down a...
Watercolor portrait tutorial in 5 steps by Brainfree. Step 1
First draw a light drawing using watercolour paper.
Paint a light blue and black undercolour using watercolour paint.
Paint is a little heaver with slightly darker paint, showing a little time for the details. Use water and a blending brush to remove errors like painting over the top nail on the top finger.
Almost done blend out all small problems and blend in edges also tighten the straight lines, like the hat brim. Last of all paint over the black areas with black ink or acrylic black to get that...
How I paint a digital pastel portrait?
Generally I use Corel painter, a digital computer program, but I exploit its tools in a traditional way. First I open a blank white paper (file) and my reference photo. I prefer a big paper (over 2000.2000pix) because I have a lot of space to work and it is only in a big file that painting and drawing tools show there real natural characters. Step 1 I use a sketch or HB pencil tool and begin to draw. I start with the eyes and then nose and lips.
.Step 2 In next stage I...
Figure 1: Image of face from a magazine cut out used as a reference for the portrait. I decided to create a sketch of the singer and actress Jennifer Lopez for this tutorial. The medium I used was pencil- HB, 2B, 3B, 4B.
I chose to draw this image reference because of the eyes shown have a lot of detail as well as the composition is tilted slightly to one side.
.Figure 2: the start of sketch. Firstly I drew a border around to have open space and make it look professional.
Draw There are a few basic tips to know that will help you with drawing mouths. I probably learned these tips around high school when a friend of mine was drawing a portrait for art class. There are just basic guidelines to follow when drawing the lips and teeth, and if you've attempted to draw a beautiful smile but the end result looked like a bunch of chicklets, then these rules are definitely for you as they were for my friend.
Step 1: Keep It Simple! When drawing the mouth you should keep it even simpler than when drawing the...
