  • Doctoral students have often requested concrete examples and guidelines from us. On the other hand, many guidebooks are at a more general level than the requested instruction. Ideally, adequate guidance would be conducted by a supervising professor, or a research group, but this is not always the case. This guidebook attempts to provide tangible tips that have been identified as beneficial for writing articles. Once someone tries to concretise the process of writing they are also easier to criticise.

This chapter delves into IDS concepts, uses, applications, and limitations. After the introduction to IDSs, their deployment and analysis are discussed in more detail. The concluding case study is a practical example of how organizations can inspect and monitor overall network activity using IDSs to protect their assets.

  • In November 2009, EIF issued a working paper on the European microfinance market (see Kraemer-Eis and Conforti, 2009). In this study, we found that there are wide spectra of final beneficiaries and intermediaries and concluded that there is no common microfinance business model in Europe. While our findings suggested that the microfinance market is immature and fragmented, they also pointed to its growing importance as a market segment with a potential to counter poverty and unemployment while fostering financial and social inclusion. ...

  • However, we believe that NOP officials need to further improve program administration and strengthen their management controls to ensure more effective enforcement of program requirements when serious violations, including operations that market product as organic while under suspension, are found. In addition, they need to strengthen their oversight of certifying agents and organic operations to ensure that organic products are consistently and uniformly meeting NOP standards.

  • On schemes involving different types of engineering, design may be let out in separate ‘packages’ to different specialist consultants. For instance the design of an industrial estate may be packaged into – roads and drainage; water supply and sewerage; power supplies, and landscaping. For large schemes the promoter may appoint an overall consultant with wide experience to co-ordinate the inputs of the specialist design consultants.

  • Imagine the opposite. For simplicity assume that A is the one the captives do not buy. It should be clear that the shoppers will not buy any good that captive do not buy so the retailer will not sell A at all. But one can always lower the price of A to such level that it is still above the marginal cost and the captives buy both goods, a strategy that increases pro t. In terms of Figure 1 B is the only good sold if the price point is in region B. For any point in this region the retailer can x the price of...

  • Fourth, this study applies new methodologies which have never been applied to emerging markets. For instance, Chapter 5 explores the determinants of risk-adjusted mutual fund performance using multidimensional regression in addition to the common approach, which is to use a zero-cost trading strategy. This alternative methodology can explore several factors simultaneously while controlling the effect between one and another. Using the two methods allows us to examine determinants of fund performance statistically and economically and it provides more meaningful results.

  • Use of vocabulary is an important aspect of academic writing. Again, following Storch and Tapper (2009), we examined the occurrences of vocabulary in the Academic Word List (AWL) developed by Coxhead (2000). The AWL consists of 570 word families derived from a corpus of academic texts drawn from our ‘sub- corpora’ from arts, commerce, law, and science (see Coxhead, 2000 for details). These words are academic words that are found across disciplines and comprise 9-10% of an academic text (Storch & Tapper, 2009).

  • This article concludes the comprehensive study started in [Sz5], where the first nontrivial isospectral pairs of metrics are constructed on balls and spheres. These investigations incorporate four different cases since these balls and spheres are considered both on 2-step nilpotent Lie groups and on their solvable extensions. In [Sz5] the considerations are completely concluded in the ball-case and in the nilpotent-case. The other cases were mostly outlined. In this paper the isospectrality theorems are completely established on spheres. ...

  • Many distributed storage systems achieve high data access through- put via partitioning and replication, each system with its own ad- vantages and tradeoffs. In order to achieve high scalability, how- ever, today’s systems generally reduce transactional support, disal- lowing single transactions fromspanning multiple partitions. Calvin is a practical transaction scheduling and data replication layer that uses a deterministic ordering guarantee to significantly reduce the normally prohibitive contention costs associated with distributed transactions.

  • Notwithstanding some important steps forward, however, as we return once again to Jackson Hole I think we would all agree that, for much of the world, the task of economic recovery and repair remains far from complete. In many countries, including the United States and most other advanced industrial nations, growth during the past year has been too slow and joblessness remains too high. Financial conditions are generally much improved, but bank credit remains tight; moreover, much of the work of implementing financial reform lies ahead of us.
