  • It should be first pointed out that French artists who taught "L'Ecole Superieux des Beaux Arts de L'Indochine" (The College of Fine Arts of Indochina) opened in Hanoi in 1925 were blazetrailers of contemporary arts of Vietnam. European arts have had much imprint on Vietnam's. Whatever "ism" have existed in Europe whether Classical Naturalism, Medieval Religionism, Post Impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Abstractionism... and even present-day Installation and Land Art..., all turn up in Vietnam.

  • The following brief sketches are presented in fear and in hope--in fear lest they prove in no wise adequate for so glorious a subject; in the hope that they may encourage not only the pupil, but the teacher, to study the lives and the works of the great artists and to make every possible effort to have copies of masterpieces ever before them to study and to love. The field of art study is a wonderful one from which to draw for language work. A double purpose is thus served. Interesting subjects are secured and pupils are given a start in acquiring a knowledge of...

  • Drawing portraits has always been, and will continue to be one of the greatest aspects of drawing. I found my first serious love of drawing when I traveled to Florence, Italy. It was there that I saw the many artists drawing portraits on the street. I would stand and stare at their amazing technique - for me, watching them work was a new experience and one of my most cherished memories from my travels in Europe.

  • In the last five years, the Internet has vastly enhanced our ability to display images to each other, and we can now think of ourselves not just as viewers and consumers of images but as makers and users of them ourselves. Indeed, if on the Internet we do not use images, we appear stuck in print culture and oblivious to the possibilities of the new medium. We can of course avoid giving these impressions by including some wallpaper and a few bits of eye candy, without thereby getting very far at all into graphics as a mode of conveying meaning....

  • It has been a pleasure to be involved in the ‘Contemporary Thinkers Reframed’ series produced by I.B.Tauris. I would like to pay tribute to Susan Lawson’s initiative and courage in proposing a series of books on contemporary thinkers aimed specifically at the visual artist and visual-arts students. I would also like to acknowledge Philippa Brewster, Liza Thompson and Gretchen Ladish’s patience and commitment to the project. Estelle Barrett has, as always, enriched this book through our ongoing dialogues and her generosity in reading the manuscript.

  • A.C.I.D. by Bui Anh Phong – Some notes on a debut... Phong has regarded himself as “Teu”, a hick character from Vietnamese folklore. He feels like an idiot in the city life. In his eyes, everything is new, interesting, but also frightening. He feels himself a “navel of the universe” where everybody constantly looks at. Every move of his seems to be watched and judged by others. The gaze of others becomes his obsession. “Others”, however, are not personalities, but attitudes and, sometimes, challenges and threats. He wants to conform to others, but others are always strangers.

  • The earliest form of painting was with colours ground in water. Egyptian artists three thousand years B.C. used this method, and various mediums, such as wax and mastic, were added as a fixative. It was what is now known as tempera painting. The Greeks acquired their knowledge of the art from the Egyptians, and later the Romans dispersed it throughout Europe. They probably introduced tempera painting into this country for decoration of the walls of their houses.

  • Too often, our failure to succeed as crafts professionals lies not in the absence of talent or skills, but in resistance to acquiring a knowledge of sound business practices—especially those related to law and contracts. Like it or not, artists and artisans are as involved as other professionals in business and business law. Because art is at best a precarious means of life support, we require familiarity with applicable law in order to proceed easily and confidently in business transactions.

  • Roberts knew she needed to launch YouthAIDS with a partnership-driven and shared knowledge perspective in mind. The first campaign, she reasoned, would have to be done on a large-scale basis that would quickly attract attention. She proposed the idea of a global awareness-building concert on MTV. Needless to say, since the NGO was just being formed, she had to lobby tirelessly to sell YouthAIDS as a charitable partner to the network, artists and potential corporate sponsors. But as more of them started to buy into the idea, this triggered a positive spiral and others...

  • Romans held Greek civilization in high regard and, like us, considered fifth-century-BC Greece to be the region’s golden age, a time characterized by refined artistic and cultural production, scholarship, and military strength. During his reign five hundred years later, Augustus sought to align his rule with this era and promote a rebirth of the golden age of Greece in Rome. Augustus’s interest in Greek art and culture strengthened Roman reverence for classical Greek art, philosophy, and intellectual life.

  • In teaching American government and politics, I constantly meet large numbers of students who have no knowledge of the most elementary facts of American history since the Civil War. When they are taken to task for their neglect, they reply that there is no textbook dealing with the period, and that the smaller histories are sadly deficient in their treatment of our age. It is to supply the student and general reader with a handy guide to contemporary history that I have undertaken this volume.

Materials that I use Sketch book - I chose a pad of recycled paper and of thicker quality so that I can use a darker lead and eraser. It’s important to draw on thicker paper if you want to create a drawing with good detail. Thinner paper is less expensive however drawing with detail requires multiple levels of shading and erasing. Shading excessively on thin paper might put a...
