My journey within the field of spirituality and mental health has been an
interesting one. It began 30-odd years ago on the day that I wandered into
my first psychiatric ward, a student psychiatric nurse with not much of a clue
about anything. In this strange land of madness, medication and control,
spiritualitywas not a priority and the idea of spiritual care as a discrete aspect
of nursing was not really on the agenda either in terms of education or practice.
It’s not so much that it was avoided, it simply wasn’t an issue....
This book is based on a seven - year study very generously supported
by the John Templeton Foundation. We are especially
grateful to Arthur Schwartz, formerly executive vice president at
the foundation, who approached us eight years ago with the idea
of undertaking this national study of students ’ search for meaning
and purpose. Thank you, Arthur, for your enormous support and
early guidance in conceptualizing the study and for challenging
us to think critically, creatively, and expansively.
Fortunately, this new reality coincides with more positive developments new to this century.
We can move information and goods faster around the globe than ever before; we can produce
more food and more goods with less investment of resources; our technology and science gives
us at least, the potential to look deeper into and better understand natural systems. From
space, we can see and study the Earth as an organism whose health depends on the health of
al its parts. We have the power to reconcile human affairs with natural laws and to thrive in the

expanding health care needs in local and global communities. Students will immerse
themselves in a curriculum structured around active learning strategies through
collaborative work with Elon’s faculty, scholars and practitioners in the field. Students
will emerge in a little more than two years as graduates prepared to employ the most
current knowledge to care for patients’ physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs.
Palliative Care: The goal of palliative care is to improve the quality of a seriously ill
person’s life, and to support the patient and family when faced with terminal illness.
This includes managing physical symptoms, assessing psychological and spiritual needs,
patient support system and discharge planning issues. Palliative care is part of hospice
care, but it can begin any time during a patient’s illness. A team approach to palliative care
is optimal, with the primary care provider and social services playing an active role.
