  • HIV-1 protease is an important target for treatment of AIDS, and efficient drugs have been developed. However, the resistance and negative side effects of the current drugs has necessitated the development of new compounds with different binding patterns. In this study, nine C-terminally duplicated HIV-1 protease inhibitors were cocrystallised with the enzyme, the crystal structures analysed at 1.8–2.3 A˚ resolution, and the inhibitory activity of the compounds characterized inorder toevaluate the effects of the individual modifications. ...

  • Neurons are highly polarized cells composed of two structurally and func-tionally distinct parts, the axon and the dendrite. The establishment of this asymmetric structure is a tightly regulated process. In fact, alterations in the proteins involved in the configuration of the microtubule lattice are fre-quent in neuro-oncologic diseases.

  • Thiamin diphosphate-dependent enzymes participate in numerous biosyn-thetic pathways and catalyse a broad range of reactions, mainly involving the cleavage and formation of C–C bonds. For example, they catalyse the nonoxidative and oxidative decarboxylation of 2-keto acids, produce 2-hydroxy ketones and transfer activated aldehydes to a variety of acceptors.

  • The biological ion channel gramicidin A (gA) was modified by synthetic means to obtain the tail-to-tail linked asymmetric gA-derived dimer com-pound3. Single-channel current measurements for 3in planar lipid bilayers exhibit an Eisenman I ion selectivity for alkali cations. The structural asymmetry does not lead to an observable functional asymmetry. The structure of 3in solution without and with Cs cations was investigated by 1 H-NMR spectroscopy. In CDCl3 ⁄CD3OH (1 : 1, v⁄v),3forms a mixture of double-strandedb-helices....

  • Signaling approach Approach to the determination of the optimal capital structure asserting that insiders in a firm have information that the market does not have; therefore, the choice of capital structure by insiders can signal information to outsiders and change the value of the firm. This theory is also called the asymmetric information approach.

  • Economic literature often discusses that in the area of access to finance for SMEs, a market imperfection/failure is not only present during a deep recession but also on an ongoing basis as a fundamental structural issue. The reasons for the market failure relate to insufficient supply of capital (debt or equity) and inadequacies on the demand side.

  • We investigate the influence of information status (IS) on constituent order in German, and integrate our findings into a loglinear surface realisation ranking model. We show that the distribution of pairs of IS categories is strongly asymmetric. Moreover, each category is correlated with morphosyntactic features, which can be automatically detected. We build a loglinear model that incorporates these asymmetries for ranking German string realisations from input LFG F-structures.

  • Several NLP tasks are characterized by asymmetric data where one class label NONE, signifying the absence of any structure (named entity, coreference, relation, etc.) dominates all other classes. Classifiers built on such data typically have a higher precision and a lower recall and tend to overproduce the NONE class. We present a novel scheme for voting among a committee of classifiers that can significantly boost the recall in such situations.
