  • In 1990, the U.S. National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP) completed the initial phase of what was then the largest environmental research program ever conducted. NAPAP research investigated the causes and effects of, and mitigation strategies for, acidic atmospheric deposition throughout the U.S. This massive environmental research and assessment effort took 10 years to complete, involved hundreds of scientists, engineers, and economists, and cost in excess of $500 million.

  • This paper analyzes the experience of the United States postal savings, and compares it to Japan’s experience with a view to assessing the past and potential future role of postal savings in Japan. It finds that demand for postal savings deposits is explained, in both countries, mainly by two variables: price (interest- differentials) and confidence in private banks. Geographical accessibility in rural areas is of less, and diminishing, importance.

The first two - knowledge-telling and knowledge-transforming - are well documented. A third stage - knowledge crafting - is more speculative, but important for understanding expert or professional levels of writing skill.

  • While there appears to be a rising incidence of problem drinking in the elderly, there are also reports that low risk drinking may provide benefits to older populations. Indeed. arguably most of the supposed benefits of alcohol consumption are to be found in older people. So, for example, the claimed protective effect of alcohol in regard to cardiovascular disease applies to the late middle aged and elderly. For this reason, the recommended optimum level of alcohol consumption for health is higher for the elderly than the young.

  • The chemical properties of organics of health concern – hydrophobic and not water soluble - results in a low bioavailability to plants. Plant growth is dependent on the water solubility of nutrients and minerals and water is the transporting vector. Organics with a low water solubility will therefore not be taken up by plants. The presence of organic environmental pollutants, like dioxins and PCBs in agricultural crops is more the result of atmospheric deposition than direct absorption from contaminated soil.

Studying genre reveals a pattern of repetition and difference. In other words, some films do have identifiable similarities, but they also contain new elements or similar elements used in new ways.

An event such as this is criss-crossed by innumerable social vectors. On one hand, a foreign artist, fresh from the ‘periphery,’ a recent arrival in the great cultural centre of the period; on the other, a Parisian artist completely established and at home in his setting.

Both high and low levels of E2 have been associated with increased risk of thromboem- bolism; high levels result in increased clot formation, while low levels result in slower clot breakdown. Unusu- ally high concentrations of estrogen (beyond normal physiological levels) directly increase the likelihood of clotting by increasing production of clotting factors VII through X in the liver [41].
