Decarbonising the world‟s energy system to avoid locking-in polluting technologies and unacceptably high
emission levels will require doubling existing investment levels to around USD 2 trillion a year or 2% of
GDP. Governments understand that large sums of capital will be required, and many are also realising the
need for further recourse to private capital as public finances have become strained in many developed
countries. Simultaneously, banking sector provision of long-term finance has become tighter due
deleveraging and new financial regulations.
OLTP transaction workloads require quick access and updates to a small set of records. This work is typically performed in
a localized area on disk, with one or a small number of parallel units. Shared-everything architectures, in which processors
share a single large disk and memory, are well suited to OLTP workloads. Shared-disk architectures, such as Oracle RAC,
can also be effective for OLTP because each server can take a subset of the queries and process them independently while
ensuring consistency through the shared-disk subsystem.
This paper presents a MapReduce algorithm for computing pairwise document similarity in large document collections. MapReduce is an attractive framework because it allows us to decompose the inner products involved in computing document similarity into separate multiplication and summation stages in a way that is well matched to efficient disk access patterns across several machines. On a collection consisting of approximately 900,000 newswire articles, our algorithm exhibits linear growth in running time and space in terms of the number of documents. ...
During the 1990s, the burgeoning private-sector demand for information technology (IT) workers, escalating private-sector pay in IT, growing military dependence on IT, and faltering military recruiting led to a concern that the military capability was vulnerable to a large shortfall in IT personnel. What basis, if any, offered assurance
Problems of nonholonomic mechanics, including many problems in robotics,
wheeled vehicular dynamics and motion generation, have attracted considerable
attention. These problems are intimately connected with important engineering
issues such as path planning, dynamic stability, and control. Thus, the investigation
of many basic issues, and in particular, the role of symmetry in such problems,
remains an important subject today.
The high data frequency not only helps to validate our results, but
also allows us to advance some analysis. For example, in Chapter 5, the fund weekly data are
used to calculate the risk-adjusted abnormal return for each year from 2000-2007. Then, it
turns into a panel data allowing us to perform a multidimensional (panel) regression on fund
Furthermore, this is the first empirical study of an emerging market which includes
flexible funds in the sample. In theory, a flexible fund is in some ways similar to equity funds
since its main assets are also stocks.
A researcher may be under the illusion that his research will sell itself more or less
automatically. On the contrary, it is the duty of an author to write an article so that an
outsider can understand the main points and the reasoning logic with relative ease. Your
article competes against other submitted article proposals. The decision on acceptance is
not done based only on the article substance, but the readability of the article also matters.
Consequently, an article must have a clear and logical structure combined with fluent
The impact of the crisis further increases the market failure – also driven by increased risk aversion
on the supply side of microfinance - and underlines the need for public support for this emerging
sector in Europe.
In addition to the fundamental structural problems of the microfinance sector in Europe, public
intervention has largely been justified and substantiated with positive externalities, i.e. that social
and financial inclusion generates attractive economic and social returns.
The focus group then defined a mass gathering as a subset of a special event. Mass
gatherings are usually found at special events that attract large numbers of spectators or
participants. Both special events and mass gatherings require the kind of additional
planning identified in the previous quote. For example, an amusement park that attracts a
large number of people is not considered a special event because large crowds are
expected. A mass gathering does not imply that the event is a special event.
For about the first ten years of its existence, cinema in the United
States and elsewhere was mainly a trick and a gadget. Before 1896 the
coin-operated Kinematograph of Edison was present at many fairs and in
many entertainment venues. Spectators had to throw a coin in the
machine and peek through glasses to see the film. The first projections,
from 1896 onwards, attracted large audiences. Lumière had a group of
operators who travelled around the world with the cinematograph, and
showed the pictures in theatres. After a few years, around 1900, films
became a part of the program in...
Writing is the most dreaded activity for my fourth grade students. Not only do
they strongly oppose writing in all forms, they struggle to use the proper mechanics to
communicate effectively with a targeted audience. My frustration with my students’
abilities to be effective writers led me to investigate the following question: “Will the
implementation of selected lessons and activities taken from 6+1 Traits of Writing and
Writer’s Workshop equip my students with the descriptive and mechanical writing skills
they need to become proficient writers?” ...
The value of the share
depends on how well its property rights are enforced. The enforcement of property rights
is usually undertaken by both individual owners and the state. In economies where the
state does not effectively enforce property rights, the enforcement by individual owners
plays a relatively more important role. The structure of share ownership affects the
degree to which corporate contracts are enforced, because it affects the owners’ abilities
and incentives to enforce the property rights delineated by the contracts.
In Eastern Europe, the incidence of poverty or
social exclusion is greatest, although the
difference between the EU-15 and EU-27
figure is relatively small. When comparing
2009 to 2010, the situation became worse in
most of the countries for which 2010 figures
are available. Within the EU, the largest
aggravation was observed in Lithuania and
The ideal experiment to evaluate the impact of socially responsible investing on performance
and fees would be to observe the same funds both with and without the SRI constraint. Most
previous studies (Gregory et al., 1997; Statman, 2000; Kreander et al., 2005; Bauer et al., 2005)
approximate the ideal experiment by comparing the performance of SRI funds to that of a
control group of comparable conventional funds, a methodology that is known as matched-pair
Dodd-Frank requires that most swaps be cleared
through a regulated clearinghouse if the clearinghouse
accepts the swap for clearing. Under the proposed rules,
all non-exempt swaps (i.e., swaps that are not subject to
the “End User” exception discussed below) are generally
expected to be subject to clearing and exchange trading
23 Additionally, swaps approved for clearing
must be traded on a registered exchange approved by the
applicable regulator (i.e.
It is interesting to consider why a sponsor chooses to support a MMMF even though it is not contractually
required to do so. Fund sponsors may be concerned about their reputation in the market place, loss of
cross-selling opportunities, or the cost of potential investor lawsuits.
We posit that fund sponsors may
also choose to provide support because they initially underestimate the amount of support necessary to
fully alleviate financial concerns in the funds. While the entirety of support is costly, the incremental cost
at each point may appear worthwhile. ...
would like to introduce this encyclopedia of psychology
by focusing on both twenty-first century
and more distant historical contexts, while additionally
highlighting the scope and depth of the work of
psychologists, their students, and their supporters.
As reading these volumes will show, psychology is a
diverse and large field. It is also a science. I remind
readers that most of the research described in these
volumes is completed through the silent contributions
of tens of thousands of volunteers as well as
nonhuman animal participants.
Details of partnering are given in Section 1.9. There are two types: ‘term (or full)
partnering’ which covers an intention to carry out a series of projects together
or for a given period; and ‘project-specific partnering’, i.e. co-operation for one
job at a time.
Normally a promoter negotiates a partnering agreement with his consultant
(if he employs one) and a contractor of his own choosing, usually because of
past satisfactory experience of working with him.
If there is confidence that the Project Initiation will result in an immediate
authorization to proceed to the next stage then perform this task now. If not, then
it will be performed after the Project Board authorizes the project to proceed as part
of the next stage planning.
Identify any additional technical or business specialists required to support the
project. These roles contribute to the creation of products by providing information
about the business and reviewing the products. They generally fulfill the "consult"
and "approve" responsibilities.
