  • I submit this volume to the public in the hope that it may increase the amount of interest usually shown in Australian History by deepening the general knowledge of the subject, and illustrating it by those vivid details which arrest the attention and enable the student to visualize past events. The number of events described in a Source Book must necessarily be smaller than that in histories of another type; but the aim is to place the student in contact with the evidence of history in order that he may become his own historian by drawing his own deductions...

  • Teaching children how to read and write has always been the primary objective of education or schooling. However, in recent years there have been concerns that this major objective has not been achieved, or has not been achieved at a satisfactory level, by many students by the end of the compulsory years of schooling. This has led to a renewed focus on literacy at both Commonwealth and state level, and the introduction of new policies and practices which are aimed at improving literacy outcomes.

  • This book does not pretend to be a history of Australia; it merely gathers into one volume that which has hitherto been dispersed through many. Our story ends where Australian history, as it is generally written, begins; but the work of the forgotten naval pioneers of the country made that beginning possible. Four sea-captains in succession had charge of the penal settlement of New South Wales, and these four men, in laying the foundation of Australia, surmounted greater difficulties than have ever been encountered elsewhere in the history of British colonization.

  • IN a former narrative, published in the preceding volume of the ILLUSTRATED TRAVELS, I gave an account of a terrible cyclone which visited the north-eastern coast of Queensland in the autumn of 1866, nearly destroying the small settlements of Cardwell and Townsville, and doing an infinity of damage by uprooting heavy timber, blocking up the bush roads, etc. Amongst other calamities attendant on this visitation was the loss of a small coasting schooner, named the 'Eva', bound from Cleveland to Rockingham Bay, with cargo and passengers. ...

  • Textilinin-1 is a Kunitz-type serine protease inhibitor isolated from the venom of the Australian common brown snake,Pseudonaja textilis. This molecule binds to and blocks the activity of a range of serine proteases, including plasmin and trypsin. Textilinin-1’s ability to inhibit plasmin, a protease involved in fibrinolysis, has raised the possibility that it could be used as an alternative to aprotinin (Trasylol) as a systemic antibleeding agent in surgery.

  • A complete history of the exploration of Australia will never be written. The story of the settlement of our continent is necessarily so intermixed with the results of private travels and adventures, that all the historian can do is to follow out the career of the public expeditions, and those of private origin which extended to such a distance, and embraced such important discoveries, as to render the results matters of national history.

  • Protected cropping provides vegetable growers with an opportunity to enhance product quality and improve food safety. The overall objective of this project was to provide Vietnamese scientists and extension specialists with the training and tools to implement and foster regionally feasible improvements to current vegetable production practices and supply chains. This was achieved through: 1) greenhouse replicated experiments and demonstration trials in Northern, Central and Southern Vietnam; 2) four in-country workshops and 3) two Australian study tours for research and extension personnel.

  • When studying in Australia, international students in general and Vietnamese students in particular meet many difficulties, one of which is writing academis essays/assignments in English. The current case study, applying the cognitivist view, aims at exploring the problems as well as the process of writing academic assignments of a particular Vietnamese student studying at an Australian university. Based on the coding scheme applied by Cumming [1989] and Bosher [1998], the study specifically addresses three major questions: ...

She was a unique scientist working in one of the first major solar radio astronomy groups after the end of World War II. This fortunate circumstance was due to the experience she gained working on radar at the major Australian laboratory during World War II. Payne-Scott was a pioneer Australian scientist leading the charge for equality of women in the work place.

  • While structuring financing packages for vital projects is among the most impor- tant roles the federal government plays in infrastructure investment, its activities extend well beyond this role and into research, issuing regulations, awarding grants, environmental protection, and even directly operating and maintaining locks, dams, bridges, and utilities throughout our country. To coordinate all of these activities and maximize the efficiency of federal infrastructure programs, we need a national infrastructure planning council.

  • Several years ago I gave a seminar about some of my research. I started out with a very simple example. One of the faculty in the audience interrupted me to say that he had worked on something like this several years ago, but his model was \much more complex". I replied \My model was complex when I started, too, but I just kept working on it till it got simple!" And that's what you should do: keep at it till it gets simple. The whole point of a model is to give a simpli ed representation of reality. Einstein once said \Everything should be as simple as possible...

  • Data on organic production was obtained from two sources. As a first step data was gathered from organic certifying organisations. The National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia, Biological Farmers of Australia/Australian Certified Organic, Tasmanian Organic- Dynamic Producers and Safe Food Production Queensland provided data. The data gathered from certifiers has a number of limitations. Firstly, only the certifying organisations that charge a levy based on sales were able to supply data on farm production. The data that was provided is not consistent and often incomplete.

  • This book is a product of a collaborative project funded by the Australian Research Council on the relationship between inter- national law and the Australian legal system. The change in the Australian public’s attention to international law during the life of the project, prompted by events such as the Iraq war, international criticism of Australia’s refugee policy, the signing of a free trade agreement with the United States and the continuing ‘war against terror’, has been remarkable.
