  • The accurate measurement of additives in food is essential in meeting both regulatory requirements and the need of consumers for accurate information about the products they eat. While there are established methods of analysis for many food additives, there are others that still require complete methods. Analytical Methods for Food Additives addresses the lack of established methods of analysis for 26 major additives. In each case, the authors review current research to establish the best available methods and how they should be used.

  • Because of the availability of powerful computational techniques, new modality techniques such as Computer-Aided Tomography (CAT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and others, and because of the new techniques of imaging processing (machine vision), the lives of many patients will be saved, and the quality of all our lives improved. This marriage of powerful computer technology and medical imaging has spawned a new and growing generation of young dynamic doctors who hold PhDs in physics and/or computer science, along with their MDs.

  • The prototypical catalytic reductiveC–Cbond formations, the Fischer-Tropsch reaction [1] and alkene hydroformylation [2], were discovered in 1922 and 1938, respectively [3,4]. These processes, which involve reductive coupling to carbon monoxide, have long been applied to the industrial manufacture of commodity chemicals [5]. Notably, alkene hydroformylation, also known as the oxo-synthesis, has emerged as the largest volume application of homogeneous metal catalysis, accounting for the production of over 7 million metric tons of aldehyde annually.

  • Name ambiguity problem has raised urgent demands for efficient, high-quality named entity disambiguation methods. In recent years, the increasing availability of large-scale, rich semantic knowledge sources (such as Wikipedia and WordNet) creates new opportunities to enhance the named entity disambiguation by developing algorithms which can exploit these knowledge sources at best. The problem is that these knowledge sources are heterogeneous and most of the semantic knowledge within them is embedded in complex structures, such as graphs and networks. ...

  • The main goal of this paper is to propose automatic schemes for the translation paired comparison method. This method was proposed to precisely evaluate a speech translation system's capability. Furthermore, the method gives an objective evaluation result, i.e., a score of the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC). The TOEIC score is used as a measure of one's speech translation capability. However, this method requires tremendous evaluation costs. Accordingly, automatization of this method is an important subject for study.

  • News stories are typically rich in NEs and therefore, comparable news corpora can be expected to contain NETEs (Klementiev and Roth, 2006; Tao et al., 2006). The large quantity and the perpetual availability of news corpora in many of the world’s languages, make mining of NETEs a viable alternative to traditional approaches. It is this opportunity that we address in our work. In this paper, we detail an effective and scalable mining method, called MINT (MIning Named-entity Transliteration equivalents), for mining of NETEs from large comparable corpora. ...

  • A major challenge in clinical periodontics is to find a reliable molecular marker of periodontal support loss with high sensitivity, specificity and utility (Buduneli & Kinane 2011). Molecules derived from inflamed host tissue and pathogenic bacteria have the potential of being used as markers of periodontitis; however, molecular markers of bone resorption have advantages as they relate to specificity for bone, easy detection, pre-analytic stability and availability of sensitive and specific assays for detection (Forde et al. 2006).

  • The relationship between the quality of a product and the organization responsible for the development of that product is multidimensional. The relationship depends upon many factors such as the business strategy and business structure of the organization, available talent, and resources needed to produce the product. It also depends upon the combination of activities selected by the organization to achieve the desired product quality.

  • The bull market of the late 1990s created significant wealth, yet subse- Tquent bear market years diminished many investor portfolios. Natu- rally, investors find the concept of shrinking assets to be unacceptable and seek ways to generate greater wealth. Emulating the best practices of the world’s most successful investors has led to increasing “retailiza- tion” of hedge funds, funds that formerly were available only to the world’s richest individuals.
