  • Computer simulation has become an essential par t of science and engineering. Digital analysis of components, in particular, is important when developing new products or optimizing designs. Today a broad spectrum of options for simulation is available; researchers use everything from basic programming languages to various high-level packages implementing advanced methods. Though each of these techniques has its own unique attributes, they all share a common concern: Can you rely on the results?...

  • One of the key decisions in achieving successful freezing of tissue-engineered products is the choice of cryoprotectant. Cryoprotectants minimize damage caused by ice crystal formation and should induce an amorphous state, rather than ice crystals during the cooling and warming phases. Although the use of cryoprotectants is mandatory, currently available reagents are cytotoxic to some extent. Since tissue-engineered products are larger than isolated cells, longer incubation times with cryoprotectant are necessary which may result in a lower survival rate.

  • For our interest rate change variable, we use changes in the U.S. 3-month commercial paper rate. A short-term commercial paper rate is a reasonable proxy for the risk-free rate (e.g., Fama and French 2001), and the risk-free rate is a component of the discount rates of both stocks and bonds. Unfortunately, daily data for the commercial paper rate are available only after 1970, with weekly increments before that. This data limitation prompts us to present two sets of results. Panel A of Table 4 presents the first set of results for the period 1915-1970, where the...

To protect borrowers, new regulations restrict these and other practices involving large penalties: in July 2008 the Federal Reserve Board severely limited the use of prepayment penalties, and the Credit CARD Act of 2009 prohibits the use of interest charges for partial balances the consumer has paid off, and restricts fees in other ways.

  • In addition to international differences in the requirements for the approval of pesticides, the complexity and cost of pesticide approvals are rising continually, which either cur- rently prevents many companies from putting products on the market that could be more efficient and cheaper than the existing ones or results in acceptable products of minor use from being withdrawn from the market. This makes it likely that future choices of the best available pesticide on the market for a particular application will be severely redu- ced by the economics of the approvals process.
