  • Shortly before I began research for this book on alternative and complementary medicine, I informed a dear friend of the pending task. His first comment was “How many volumes?” Those three words would haunt me throughout the project. • Alternative medicine is a term that causes confusion for most people. What is alternative medicine? How does it compare with conventional medicine? What is integrative medicine? Is integrative medicine the same as alternative medicine? How does alternative medicine compare with holistic health? What do all of these practices have in common, and what are their differences? Do they work? Are they safe? The reason most consumers choose to explore alternative approaches to healing is a very simple one: what they’re currently doing isn’t working.

Jamestown was a seed carried from the Old World and planted in the New; medicine was one of the European characteristics transmitted with the seed across the Atlantic. In the process of transmission changes took place, and in the New World medicine adapted itself to some circumstances unknown to Europe; but the contact with European developments in theory and practice was never--and is not--broken....

  • Among the many diseases incident to the coal-miner, none come oftener under medical treatment, than affections of the respiratory and circulating organs. While the collier is subject--during his short but laborious life--to the other diseases which afflict the labouring classes in this country, such as inflammations, fevers, acute rheumatism, and the various eruptive diseases, he, at last, unavoidably, falls a victim to lesions within the cavity of the chest, arising from the nature of his employment.

  • Ralph Steinman discovered, in 1973, a new cell type that he called the dendritic cell. He speculated that it could be important in the immune system and went on to test whether dendritic cells could activate T cells, a cell type that has a key role in adaptive immunity and develops an immunologic memory against many different substances. In cell culture experiments, he showed that the presence of dendritic cells resulted in vivid responses of T cells to such substances.

  • The findings of these few studies suggest that reflective thinking may develop in association with certain interventions. It also appears that the development of reflective thinking is related to other aspects of learning and professional development. The methods employed were usually observational and analytical, and appropriate to the questions asked. However, only one of these studies had a comparison group, so the transferability of the interventions and results across contexts is unclear.
