Argues that, in order to address the growing economic, social, and political pressures of the 21st Century, China will have to build solid foundations for a knowledge-based economy by updating the economic and institutional regime, upgrading education and learning, and building information infrastructure.
Computing the usual productivity measures requires data on the value of
transactions and either prices or quantities. In the final research study of this
volume, Erwin Diewert notes that Canada lacks direct price and quantity measures
for many important services industries. Other nations also have this problem.
As a result, the usual productivity indexes cannot be evaluated properly for
those services industries, nor can we get a complete picture of productivity performance
for the economy as a whole.
The importance of innovation was highlighted by the March 2000 European Council in
Lisbon. As a response to the challenges of globalisation and the new knowledge-driven
economy, the European Council called for a challenging programme for building knowledge
infrastructures, enhancing innovation and economic reform, and modernising social welfare
and education systems.
A major trend in the world economy in recent years has been the dynamic growth in
a number of regions including China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Russia and the new
European Union member states in Central Europe. The strong economic performance
of these regions will generate a major shift in world competitiveness with
important implications for Europe. Compared to this dynamism, economic growth
in Europe has been weak in recent years.
Media Piracy in Emerging Economies is the first independent, large-scale study of music, film and software piracy in emerging economies, with a focus on Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa, Mexico and Bolivia. Based on three years of work by some thirty five researchers, Media Piracy in Emerging Economies tells two overarching stories: one tracing the explosive growth of piracy as digital technologies became cheap and ubiquitous around the world, and another following the growth of industry lobbies that have reshaped laws and law enforcement around copyright protection.
It is widely accepted that innovation is key to economic growth. Countries where research and innovation are high on the national agenda are best suited to prosper in the knowledge-based economy. Conversely, countries whose economies are mainly dependent on natural resources and basic industries tend to lack competitiveness and flexibility in adapting to changing globa
In the last few years, the search for radically new approaches to software engineering has witnessed a great momentum. These efforts are well justified by the troubling state of present day computer science. Software engineering practices based on design-time architectural composition (the only assessed way of doing software engineering so far), lead to brittle and fragile systems, unable to gracefully cope with reconfiguration and faults.
The recession was intertwined with a major financial crisis that exacerbated the negative effects
on the economy. Falling stock and house prices led to a large decline in household wealth (net
worth), which plummeted by over $16 trillion or about 24% during 2008 and 2009. In addition,
the financial panic led to an explosion of risk premiums (i.e., compensation to investors for
accepting extra risk over relatively risk-free investments such as U.S.
One method of addressing personal fi nances among students of higher education is
through college- and university-based fi nancial education programs. In recent years,
there has been a growth in the number of these programs, which vary widely in their
composition. Some schools offer individual fi nancial counseling services for students,
while others provide presentations and workshops relative to personal fi nance
topics; others provide websites with links to fi nancial content.

While this book is all about football, it does not pretend to be a chronicle
of every star player, successful coach, or great match. Neither
does it list every premiership team, leading goal kicker, or best player
award. This is a book about the business and management of football,
and the ways in which the various football codes evolved from essentially
community-based sports underpinned by a local supporter
base, into multi-layered enterprises that compete in the mass entertainment

In the emerging global economy, e-commerce and e-business have increasingly become a necessary component of business strategy and a strong catalyst for economic development. The integration of information and communications technology (ICT) in business has revolutionized relationships within organizations and those between and among organizations and individuals. Specifically, the use of ICT in business has enhanced productivity, encouraged greater customer participation, and enabled mass customization, besides reducing costs....
A charming Trojan Horse of a book While this slim book is
ostensibly a guide to cracking the cult of the puzzle in
Microsoft's hiring practices, Poundstone manages to sneak in a
wealth of material on the crucial issue of how to hire in
today's knowledge-based economy. How Would You Move

Microsoft's notorious hiring challenges. But, more important,
Poundstone, an accomplished science journalist, shows how
puzzles can — and cannot — identify the potential stars of a
