This book introduces a variety of problem statements in classical optimal control, in optimal estimation and filtering, and in optimal control problems with non-scalar-valued performance criteria. Many example problems are solved completely in the body of the text. All chapter-end exercises are sketched in the appendix. The theoretical part of the book is based on the calculus of variations, so the exposition is very transparent and requires little mathematical rigor.

This paper describes a novel method by which a dialogue agent can learn to choose an optimal dialogue strategy. While it is widely agreed that dialogue strategies should be formulated in terms of communicative intentions, there has been little work on automatically optimizing an agent's choices when there are multiple ways to realize a communicative intention. Our method is based on a combination of learning algorithms and empirical evaluation techniques.
Objective of study determining diet formula for 4-breeds exotic hybrid with optimal protein level bases on balancing some essential amino acids includes: lysine, methionine and threonine in order to improve grow capacity, feed utilization efficiency and to reduce urinal and faecal nitrogen and phosphorus excretion; formulating some formulas base on the local ingredients with optimal protein and amino acids level to ensure production efficiency of exotic 4-breeds hybrid and to reduce environment pollution in pig production.
In the method of creating digital terrain model (DTM) by using digital photogrammetry, the picket sampling interval (PSI) plays an important role since it strongly influences on the production effectiveness and on the accuracy of created DTMs. The optimal value of PSI must be balanced between requirements of effectiveness and of accuracy. This research is focused on the influence of PSI on root mean square error (RMSE) of created DTM and on the number of error pickets (caused by limitation of image matching technique) that must be checked and corrected manually.

We propose a hybrid approach to coordinate structure analysis that combines a simple grammar to ensure consistent global structure of coordinations in a sentence, and features based on sequence alignment to capture local symmetry of conjuncts. The weight of the alignmentbased features, which in turn determines the score of coordinate structures, is optimized by perceptron training on a given corpus. A bottom-up chart parsing algorithm efﬁciently ﬁnds the best scoring structure, taking both nested or nonoverlapping ﬂat coordinations into account. ...
Inspired by previous preprocessing approaches to SMT, this paper proposes a novel, probabilistic approach to reordering which combines the merits of syntax and phrase-based SMT. Given a source sentence and its parse tree, our method generates, by tree operations, an n-best list of reordered inputs, which are then fed to standard phrase-based decoder to produce the optimal translation. Experiments show that, for the NIST MT-05 task of Chinese-toEnglish translation, the proposal leads to BLEU improvement of 1.56%. ...

Methods for deciding the locations of fragment boundaries are, however, scarce. We propose a fragmentation method based on dynamic programming. Medical imaging has been transformed over the past 30 years by the advent
of computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and
various advances in x-ray and ultrasonic techniques. An enabling force behind
this progress has been the (so far) exponentially increasing power of
computers, which has made it practical to explore fundamentally new approaches.
This paper considers the problem of dynamic survivable routing in WDM networks with single link failure model. This work mainly concerns in how to dynamically determine a protection cycle (i.e., two link-disjoint paths between a node pair) to establish a dependable lightpath with backup paths sharing. The problem is identified as NP-complete, thus a heuristic for finding near optimal solution with reasonable computation time is usually preferred.
This paper first presents a theoretical interpretation of the translation process. It then analyzes existing machine-translation research strategies and points out that some of the generally accepted principles of these strategies are not optimal. Finally, an alternative strategy is proposed, based on the author's theoretical position and research results.
The task of aligning corresponding phrases across two related sentences is an important component of approaches for natural language problems such as textual inference, paraphrase detection and text-to-text generation. In this work, we examine a state-of-the-art structured prediction model for the alignment task which uses a phrase-based representation and is forced to decode alignments using an approximate search approach.
