  • All practical systems contain nonlinear dynamics. Control system development for these systems has traditionally been based on linearized system dynamics in conjunction with linear control techniques. Sometimes it is possible to describe the operation of systems by a linear model around its operating points. Linearized system can provide approximate behavior of the system. But in analyzing the overall system behavior, the resulting system model is inadequate or inaccurate. Moreover, the stability of the system cannot be guaranteed.

  • If successful, this book will change your idea about what an optimal investment portfolio is. It is intended to be a guide both to understanding irrational investor behavior and to creating individual investors’ portfolios that account for these irrational behaviors. In this book, an optimal portfolio lies on the efficient frontier, but it may move up or down that frontier depending on the individual needs and preferences of each investor.

  • Understanding of the neuroendocrine system provides an insight into a wide range of bodily and mental processes. Neuroendocrinology and Behavior brings its readers a concise guide to up-to-date knowledge on the function of the endocrine glands and organs in association with neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, and behavioral manifestations. Various forms of stress response, e.g. anxiety and cognitive changes, have been intrinsic to both ourselves and other species.

  • A systematic control design methodology is introduced for multi-input/multi-output stable open loop plants with multiple saturations. This new methodology is a substantial improvement over previous heuristic single-input/single-output approaches. The idea is to introduce a supervisor loop so that when the references and/or disturbances are sufficiently small, the control system operates linearly as designed.

  • Organization scholars have long acknowledged that control processes are integral to the way in which organizations function. While control theory research spans many decades and draws on several rich traditions, theoretical limitations have kept it from generating consistent and interpretable empirical findings and from reaching consensus concerning the nature of key relationships.

  • Forty years ago there was hardly a field called ‘behavioral sciences’. In fact, psychology largely was the behavioral sciences, with some help from group theory in sociology and decision- making in economics. Now, of course, psychology has expanded and developed in a myriad of ways, to the point where ‘behavioral sciences’ is often the more useful term. Physiological psychology has become neuroscience, covering areas not previously part of psychology. Decision-making has become decision science, involving people from economics, marketing, and other disciplines.

  • Abnormality means behavior, thinking processes, or feelings deemed undesirable and therefore subject to control or change. Differing points of view about theoretical orientation, tolerance for deviance, where to draw the line between normal and abnormal, and the use of labeling lead to differences in the criteria used for definitions. Important criteria include subjective discomfort, disability or inefficiency, and deviance, especially bizarre or reality-distorting deviance.

  • Most available literature on cockroaches deals with domestic pests and the half dozen or so other species that are easily and commonly kept in laboratories and museums. It reflects the extensive efforts undertaken to find chinks in the armor of problematic cockroaches, and the fact that certain species are ideal for physiological and behavioral investigations under controlled conditions. These studies have been summarized in some excellent books, including those by Guthrie and Tindall (1968), Cornwell (1968),Huber et al. (1990), Bell and Adiyodi (1982a), and Rust et al. (1995).

  • In statistical machine translation, a researcher seeks to determine whether some innovation (e.g., a new feature, model, or inference algorithm) improves translation quality in comparison to a baseline system. To answer this question, he runs an experiment to evaluate the behavior of the two systems on held-out data. In this paper, we consider how to make such experiments more statistically reliable.

  • A number of results in the study of realtime sentence comprehension have been explained by computational models as resulting from the rational use of probabilistic linguistic information. Many times, these hypotheses have been tested in reading by linking predictions about relative word difficulty to word-aggregated eye tracking measures such as go-past time. In this paper, we extend these results by asking to what extent reading is well-modeled as rational behavior at a finer level of analysis, predicting not aggregate measures, but the duration and location of each fixation. ...

Most approaches to dialog control described in the literature offer either rigid action schemata that enable the simulation of the desired behavior on the surface (but lack the necessary degree of flexibility, e. g.
