  • C++ is a powerful language that unifies high-level programming paradigms, such as object oriented programming, with low-level efficiencies, such as the ability to directly manipulate memory. For these reasons, C++ has been embraced as the language of choice among game developers.

  • Module II is the second course in the C++ Programming for Game Developers series. Recall that in Module I we started off by studying fundamental programming concepts like variables, console input and output, arrays, conditional statements, strings, loops, and file input and output. We then pursued higher level programming methodologies such as classes, object oriented programming design, operator overloading, inheritance, and polymorphism. By now you should feel competent with the fundamentals and at least comfortable with the higher level subject matter...

  • Inheritance is the practice of passing on property, titles, debts, rights and obligations upon the death of an individual. It represents also to pass a characteristic, genetically. It has long played an important role in human societies. The rules of inheritance differ between societies and have changed over time.

  • Similar performance benefits are also available in gas turbine an reciprocating gas engine cogeneration systems. For example, an class technology gas turbine generator with feeding to an HRSG (which in turn provides process steam) can yield overall energy effectiveness levels between 80-85% depending upon process steam conditions. In comparison, the same F-class gas turbine i combined cycle (and producing power only) yields an overall energy effectiveness of between 50-55% depending upon the c design. This comparison is illustrated in Figure 3.

  • We develop a novel approach to the semantic analysis of short text segments and demonstrate its utility on a large corpus of Web search queries. Extracting meaning from short text segments is difficult as there is little semantic redundancy between terms; hence methods based on shallow semantic analysis may fail to accurately estimate meaning. Furthermore search queries lack explicit syntax often used to determine intent in question answering.

  • In this paper, we present initial experiments in the recognition of deceptive language. We introduce three data sets of true and lying texts collected for this purpose, and we show that automatic classification is a viable technique to distinguish between truth and falsehood as expressed in language. We also introduce a method for class-based feature analysis, which sheds some light on the features that are characteristic for deceptive text.

  • We address the rating-inference problem, wherein rather than simply decide whether a review is “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”, as in previous sentiment analysis work, one must determine an author’s evaluation with respect to a multi-point scale (e.g., one to five “stars”). This task represents an interesting twist on standard multi-class text categorization because there are several different degrees of similarity between class labels; for example, “three stars” is intuitively closer to “four stars” than to “one star”.

  • We define a new feature selection score for text classification based on the KL-divergence between the distribution of words in training documents and their classes. The score favors words that have a similar distribution in documents of the same class but different distributions in documents of different classes. Experiments on two standard data sets indicate that the new method outperforms mutual information, especially for smaller categories.

  • Object-oriented programming (OOP), inheritance is a way to establish Is-a relationship between objects.[note 1] It is often confused as a way to reuse the existing code which is not a good practice because inheritance for implementation reuse leads to Tight Coupling. Re-usability of code is achieved through composition

  • the lexical features of a language. The work is based upon the hypothesis that whenever two words are semantically dissimilar, this difference will manifest itself in the syntax via lexical distribution (in a sense, playing out the notion of distributional analysis [Harris 51]). Most, if not all, features have a semantic basis. For instance, there is a clear semantic difference between most count and mass nouns. But while meaning specifies the core of a word class, it does not specify precisely what can and cannot be a member of a class. For instance, furniture is a mass noun in...

  • As empirically demonstrated by the last SensEval exercises, assigning the appropriate meaning to words in context has resisted all attempts to be successfully addressed. One possible reason could be the use of inappropriate set of meanings. In fact, WordNet has been used as a de-facto standard repository of meanings. However, to our knowledge, the meanings represented by WordNet have been only used for WSD at a very fine-grained sense level or at a very coarse-grained class level. We suspect that selecting the appropriate level of abstraction could be on between both levels. ...

  • Asset allocation investigates the optimal division of a portfolio among different asset classes. Standard theory involves the optimal mix of risky stocks, bonds, and cash together with various subdivisions of these asset classes. Underlying this is the insight that diversification allows for achieving a balance between risk and return: by using different types of investment, losses may be limited and returns are made less volatile without losing too much potential gain.

Gauss and the 200th anniversary of the birth of J.-L. Dirichlet. The volume begins with a definitive summary of the life and work of Dirichlet and continues with thirteen papers by leading experts on research topics of current interest in number theory that were directly influenced by Gauss and Dirichlet.

Tutoring can lead to an increased sense of accom- plishment and self-esteem, better mastery of academic skills, increased ability to apply and integrate knowledge taught in different courses and a broader, more real- istic outlook on the process of teaching and learning.

  •  Compression of executable code in embedded microprocessor systems, used in the past mainly to reduce the memory footprint of embedded software, is gaining interest for the potential reduction in memory bus traffic and power consumption. We propose three new schemes for code compression, based on the concepts of static (using the static representation of the executable) and dynamic (using program execution traces) entropy and compare them with a state-of-the-art compression scheme, IBM’s CodePack.

Most of this code should be somewhere between familiar and monotonous, by this point. However, there is one new wrinkle, as the ejbCreate method finds a User entity bean based on the username parameter. This bean reference is kept for the duration of the stateful session.
