  • This book is part of a two-part program focused on the broad theme of “biochemistry and fine-tuning.” Fitness of the Cosmos for Life began with a symposium held at Harvard University in October 20031 in honor of the 90th anniversary of the publication of Lawrence J. Henderson’s The Fitness of the Environment.2 The symposium was an interdisciplinary, exploratory research meeting of scientists and other scholars that served as a stimulus for the creative thinking process used in developing the content of this book.

  • Chapter 3 - Water and the fitness of the environment. This chapter describes the structure of the water molecule and explores the many ways that polar covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds among water molecules affect organisms and their interactions with their environments. In addition, this chapter discusses topics including concentrations of solutions, hydrogen ion concentration (pH), and buffer solutions.

  • In the last two decades, fractional (or non integer) differentiation has played a very important role in various fields such as mechanics, electricity, chemistry, biology, economics, control theory and signal and image processing. For example, in the last three fields, some important considerations such as modelling, curve fitting, filtering, pattern recognition, edge detection, identification, stability, controllability, observability and robustness are now linked to long-range dependence phenomena. Similar progress has been made in other fields listed here.

  • In defining a new paradigm it is difficult to know where to begin. How do you take fifteen years of medical practice in pathology and ten years of clinical observation utilizing the theories of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, and therapeutic nutrition and meld them into a model of biological understanding and medical practice? The answer is actually quite simple — start from the beginning and build a convincing model based upon sound physics, physiology, pathology, and clinical medicine and see if the model fits the expected outcome.

  • Today’s challenge to business leadership is ensuring profitability while doing the right thing using environmentally sustainable methods. It is possible for business leaders to make money, engage in ethical leadership, and participate in preserving the environment for future generations. It is possible to fit these ideas together, but it is not easy. Environmentalists and business leaders have traditionally seen themselves at odds. But the concepts of business, ethics, and the environment can be aligned to create innovation rather than legislation and litigation.

  • The idea of replacing a dysfunctional or missing body part with a prosthesis is perhaps as old as the history of humankind; yet, it still continues to be a fascinating theme. While early prostheses were limited to external organs (e.g. wooden legs), the twentieth century witnessed the implantation of numerous devices inside the human body, some of which have since become routine surgical procedures.

  • The charging process can be speeded up by applying swabs dipped in warm water to the refrigerant cylinder. Never heat cylinders with a blowtorch or immerse them in boiling or very hot water. A rapid charger is available. This device, fitted between the hose and the cylinder, acts as a restrictor or limit valve, maintaining a higher constant pressure in the cylinder and preventing early frosting. The vapour passing through the device is less superheated when it reaches the compressor, so less time is taken to charge the system....
