  • Low birth weight, malnourished and non-breastfed children and those living in overcrowded conditions are at higher risk of acquiring pneumonia. These children are also at a higher risk of death from pneumonia. Prevention is key, including early recognition and detection, immunization (measles, HIB and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines), adequate nutrition and exclusive breastfeeding. Infants of less than six months of age, who are not breastfed, have a risk of dying from pneumonia five times greater than infants who are exclusively breastfed for the first six months.

  • The line of demarcation made between infancy and childhood, both by ancient and modern writers, has always been arbitrary. I would draw the line between the two, at a period of time which appears to me to be the most natural, the most simple, and least likely to lead the reader into the danger of misapplying any part of the practical directions of this, or any future chapter of the work. We will consider, then, that-- Infancy, commencing with birth, extends to about the end of the second year, when the first dentition is completed....

  • Nutrition is one of the most important factors that impact health in all areas of the lifecycle. Pregnant women need adequate food and health care to deliver a healthy baby who has a good birth weight and a fighting chance for survival. In many regions of the world, the infant mortality rate is very high, meaning that many infants will not live to see their first birthday. Breastfeeding is the ideal method of feeding and nurturing infants, because breast milk contains many immunologic agents that protect the infant against bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

  • In low- and middle-income countries, complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death among girls aged 15 to 19. And in 2008, there were an estimated three million unsafe abortions among girls in this age group. The adverse effects of adolescent childbearing also extend to the health of their infants. Perinatal deaths are 50% higher among babies born to mothers under 20 years of age than among those born to mothers aged 20 to 29. The newborns of adolescent mothers are also more likely to have low birth weight, with the risk of long-term effects....

  • Most of my previous books have been released under a slightly different Creative Com- mons license, one that allowed for derivative works (that is, new creative works based on this one). Keen observers will have already noticed that this book is licensed “NoDerivs” -- that is, you can't make remixes without permission. A word of explanation for this shift is in order. When I first started publishing under Creative Commons licenses, I had to carefully explain this to my editor and publisher at Tor Books.

  • In direct marketing, only a limited number of all potential customers will be selected for the direct promotion. As a result, the classification model is required to rank customers by how likely they belong to the class initiating the contact. Exactly how many will be selected in order to achieve the highest net profit depends on the performance of the model. For this reason, a classifier adopted for direct marketing should not only classify, but also classify with a confidence measurement for ranking observations.

  • Neonatal sepsis still remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the newborn, particularly in preterm, low birth weight infants. Despite advances in neonatal care, overall case-fatality rates from sepsis may be as high as 50%. Clinical signs of bacterial infection are vague and non-specific, and up to now there exists no easily available, reliable marker of infection despite a large bulk of studies focussing on inflammatory indices in neonatology. Every neonatologist is faced with the uncertainty of under- or over- diagnosing bacterial infection.

  • One of the chief benefits enjoyed by Academics is the chance to have exchange and interchange with both specialists and trainees. During our respective careers, we have derived, and continue to derive, great rewards from this invaluable communication, and this was indeed the driving force behind the undertaking of this editorship. The field of Obstetrics differs substantially from that of plain Gynecology as from other specialties as well, since the wishes and expectations of the pregnant woman are very specific and unusually exacting.
