  • The aim of this study was to assess the effects of Pomelo (Citrus grandis (L.) Osbeck) peel extracts (CGE) on activity of lipid-carbohydrate metabolic enzymes such as Carnitine pamitoyl-transferase (CPT), lipase, hexokinase, glucose 6-phosphatase and blood lipid glucose parameters in experimental obese and diabetic mice. The results showed that, in the experimental obese mice treated daily, orally with CGE at dose of 1200 mg/body weight for three weeks,

  • Optimal conditions for the extraction of black fungus polysaccharides were 350 W, 5, 35 min and 90 ◦C, for ultrasonic power, ratio of water to sample, extraction time and extraction temperature, respectively. Gas chromatography (GC) analysis showed that black fungus polysaccharides contained glucose, xylose, mannose and ribose. Their molar percentages were 6.8%, 34.2%, 50.7% and 8.9%, respectively. FT-IR and NMR analysis showed typical chemical structure of black fungus polysaccharides.

  • Hemolytic Anemias Due to Abnormalities of the MembraneCytoskeleton Complex The detailed architecture of the red cell membrane is complex, but its basic design is relatively simple (Fig. 101-2). The lipid bilayer, which incorporates phospholipids and cholesterol, is spanned by a number of proteins that have their hydrophobic transmembrane domains embedded in the membrane. Most of these proteins have hydrophilic domains extending toward both the outside and the inside of the cell.

  • Drugs li KT used in Hyperlipoproteinemias port vehicles in the aqueous media of lymph and blood. To this end, small amounts of lipid are coated with a layer of phospholipids, embedded in which are additional proteins—the apolipoproteins (A). According to the amount and the composition of stored lipids, as well as the type of apolipoprotein, one distinguishes 4 transport forms: Lipid-Lowering Agents Triglycerides and cholesterol are essential constituents of the organism.

  • Site of Infection The location of the infected site may play a major role in the choice and dose of antimicrobial drug. Patients with suspected meningitis should receive drugs that can cross the blood-CSF barrier; in addition, because of the relative paucity of phagocytes and opsonins at the site of infection, the agents should be bactericidal. Chloramphenicol, an older drug but occasionally useful in the treatment of meningitis, is bactericidal for common organisms causing meningitis (i.e.

  • The retirement crisis is directly attributable to the failure of the “three-legged stool” of retirement security. Traditionally, defined benefit pension plans (“pensions”), personal savings, and Social Security were seen as the three pillars creating a solid foundation for our retirement system. Each should play an important role in supporting people in old age. However, the stool, never sturdy, has become increasingly wobbly as pensions have disappeared and the middle class is finding it harder and harder to save. ...

  • Secondary prevention refers to the detection and management of presympto- matic disease, and the prevention of its progression to symptomatic disease. Screening is the dominant practice in this space, exemplified by cancer screening (e.g., mammography, colonoscopy), and cardiac risk screening (e.g., lipid testing, blood pressure screens). The margins between primary and secondary prevention can at times blur, depending on definitions used for diseases, their risks, and their antecedents.
