The editor has incorporated scientific contributions from a diverse group of leading
researchers in the field of hematology and related blood cell research. This book aims
to provide an overview of current knowledge pertaining to our understanding of
hematology. The main subject areas will include blood cell morphology and function,
the pathophysiology and genetics of hematological disorders and malignancies, blood
testing and typing, and the processes governing hematopoiesis. Blood cell physiology,
biochemistry and blood flow are covered in this book....

This book is designed to fit into a handbag or shirt pocket. It
contains material which is usually required in a hurry when
treating a critically ill or injured infant or child. In addition to
information relevant to emergency care, there are what we
hope will be useful pages of data on subjects which without a
photographic memory would normally require reference to a
paediatric text book. Examples include a weight for height
chart, normal values for common biochemical tests, normal
developmental profiles and normal ECG measurements....
The benefit-to-risk ratio of blood products needs constant
evaluation. Blood products, as therapeutic agents,
have had the test of time but lack the evidence we expect
from other medicinals. Blood, an organ, is used as
a pharmaceutical agent by the medical profession, due to
the achievements in collection, processing, banking, and
distribution. The fact that the most common risk of blood
transfusion isblood delivery error supports the notion that
blood is handled as a pharmaceutical agent.
Blood transfusion is a field where there has been, and continue to be, significant advances
in science, technology and most particularly governance. The aim of this book is to provide
students of allied medical sciences, medicine and transfusion practitioners with a comprehensive
overview of both the scientific and managerial aspects of blood transfusion. The book
is intended to equip biomedical, clinical and allied medical professionals with practical tools
to allow for an informed practice in the field of blood transfusion management....
The process of collecting and analyzing the data is critical in healthcare as it constitutes the basis for categorization of patient health
problems. Data collected in medical practice ranges from free form text to structured text, numerical measurements, recorded
signals, and imaging data.
Screening is performed earlier and more frequently when there is a strong
family history. Randomized, controlled trials have documented that fecal occult blood testing (FOBT) confers a 15 to 30% reduction in colon cancer mortality. Although randomized trials have not been performed for sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy, well-designed case-control studies suggest similar or greater efficacy relative to FOBT.
In the future, Pap smear frequency may be influenced by HPV testing and
the HPV vaccine.
Diabetes represents a major threat to public health with alarmingly rising trends of
incidence and severity in recent years, as it appears to correlate closely with emerging
patterns of nutrition/diet and behavior/exercise worldwide. The concentration of blood
glucose in healthy human subjects is about 90 mg/dl and defines the state of
normoglycaemia. Significant and prolonged deviations from this level may give rise to
numerous pathologies with serious and extensive clinical impact that is increasingly
recognized by current medical practice....
Harrison's Internal Medicine Chapter 42. Gastrointestinal Bleeding
Gastrointestinal Bleeding: Introduction
Bleeding from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract may present in five ways. Hematemesis is vomitus of red blood or "coffee-grounds" material. Melena is black, tarry, foul-smelling stool. Hematochezia is the passage of bright red or maroon blood from the rectum. Occult GI bleeding (GIB) may be identified in the absence of overt bleeding by a fecal occult blood test or the presence of iron deficiency.
