  • In this paper we introduce a method for partial description of the Poisson boundary for a certain class of groups acting on a segment. As an application we find among the groups of subexponential growth those that admit nonconstant bounded harmonic functions with respect to some symmetric (infinitely supported) measure µ of finite entropy H(µ). This implies that the entropy h(µ) of the corresponding random walk is (finite and) positive. As another application we exhibit certain discontinuity for the recurrence property of random walks. ...

  • In this paper, we prove global second derivative estimates for solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the Monge-Amp`re equation when the inhomogee neous term is only assumed to be H¨lder continuous. As a consequence of our o approach, we also establish the existence and uniqueness of globally smooth solutions to the second boundary value problem for the affine maximal surface equation and affine mean curvature equation.

  • Annals of Mathematics We study the motion of an incompressible perfect liquid body in vacuum. This can be thought of as a model for the motion of the ocean or a star. The free surface moves with the velocity of the liquid and the pressure vanishes on the free surface. This leads to a free boundary problem for Euler’s equations, where the regularity of the boundary enters to highest order. We prove local existence in Sobolev spaces assuming a “physical condition”, related to the fact that the pressure of a fluid has to be positive. ...

  • In this work, we introduce the TESLACELAB metric (Translation Evaluation of Sentences with Linear-programming-based Analysis – Character-level Evaluation for Languages with Ambiguous word Boundaries) for automatic machine translation evaluation. For languages such as Chinese where words usually have meaningful internal structure and word boundaries are often fuzzy, TESLA-CELAB acknowledges the advantage of character-level evaluation over word-level evaluation.

  • Sentence boundary detection in speech is important for enriching speech recognition output, making it easier for humans to read and downstream modules to process. In previous work, we have developed hidden Markov model (HMM) and maximum entropy (Maxent) classifiers that integrate textual and prosodic knowledge sources for detecting sentence boundaries.

  • An approach to automatic detection of syllable boundaries is presented. We demonstrate the use of several manually constructed grammars trained with a novel algorithm combining the advantages of treebank and bracketed corpora training. We investigate the effect of the training corpus size on the performance of our system. The evaluation shows that a hand-written grammar performs better on finding syllable boundaries than does a treebank grammar.

  • Most NLP applications work under the assumption that a user input is error-free; thus, word segmentation (WS) for written languages that use word boundary markers (WBMs), such as spaces, has been regarded as a trivial issue. However, noisy real-world texts, such as blogs, e-mails, and SMS, may contain spacing errors that require correction before further processing may take place. For the Korean language, many researchers have adopted a traditional WS approach, which eliminates all spaces in the user input and re-inserts proper word boundaries. ...

  • This paper describes a novel instancebased sentence boundary determination method for natural language generation that optimizes a set of criteria based on examples in a corpus. Compared to existing sentence boundary determination approaches, our work offers three significant contributions. First, our approach provides a general domain independent framework that effectively addresses sentence boundary determination by balancing a comprehensive set of sentence complexity and quality related constraints.

  • This paper talks about the deciding practical sense boundary of homonymous words. The important problem in dictionaries or thesauri is the confusion of the sense boundary by each resource. This also becomes a bottleneck in the practical language processing systems. This paper proposes the method about discovering sense boundary using the collocation from the large corpora and the clustering methods. In the experiments, the proposed methods show the similar results with the sense boundary from a corpus-based dictionary and sense-tagged corpus. ...

  • Chinese sentences are written with no special delimiters such as space to indicate word boundaries. Existing Chinese NLP systems therefore employ preprocessors to segment sentences into words. Contrary to the conventional wisdom of separating this issue from the task of sentence understanding, we propose an integrated model that performs word boundary identification in lockstep with sentence understanding. In this approach, there is no distinction between rules for word boundary identification and rules for sentence understanding. These two functions are combined. ...

  • This article outlines a new method of locating discourse boundaries based on lexical cohesion and a graphical technique called dotplotting. The application of dotplotting to discourse segmentation can be performed either manually, by examining a graph, or automatically, using an optimization algorithm. The results of two experiments involving automatically locating boundaries between a series of concatenated documents are presented. Areas of application and future directions for this work are also outlined. Introduction In general, texts are "about" some topic. ...

  • You may find that other grammars recognise different word classes from the ones listed here. They may also define the boundaries between the classes in different ways. In some grammars, for instance, pronouns are treated as a separate word class, whereas we treat them as a subclass of nouns. A difference like this should not cause confusion. Instead, it highlights an important principle in grammar, known as GRADIENCE. This refers to the fact that the boundaries between the word classes are not absolutely fixed.

  • The analysis model of a structure includes nodes (joints), elements and boundary conditions. Finite elements are used in data entry, representing members of the structure for numerical analysis, and nodes define the locations of such members. Boundary conditions represent the status of connections between the structure and neighboring structures such as foundations. A structural analysis refers to mathematical simulations of a numerical analysis model of a structure.
