  • Here are my online notes for my Calculus I course that I teach here at Lamar University. Despite the fact that these are my “class notes” they should be accessible to anyone wanting to learn Calculus I or needing a refresher in some of the early topics in calculus. I’ve tried to make these notes as self contained as possible and so all the information needed to read through them is either from an Algebra or Trig class or contained in other sections of the notes.

  • The mere thought of having to take a required calculus course is enough to make legions of students break out in a cold sweat. Others who have no intention of ever studying the subject have this notion that calculus is impossibly difficult unless you happen to be a direct descendant of Einstein. Well, I’m here to tell you that you can master calculus. It’s not nearly as tough as its mystique would lead you to think. Much of calculus is really just very advanced algebra, geometry, and trig. It builds upon and is a logical extension of those subjects.

  • This book was written to help you solve problems and understand concepts covered in a business calculus course. To make the material easy to absorb, only one idea is covered in each section. Examples and solutions are given in detail so that you will not be distracted by missing algebra and/or calculus steps. Topics that students find difficult are written with extra care.

These refinements ensure that students and instructors have the best materials available. The number of pages in the book, however, remains unchanged from the 4th edition.

Since my aim also has been to demonstrate some solution strategy I have as far as possible structured the examples according to the following form A Awareness, i.e. a short description of what is the problem. D Decision, i.e. a reflection over what should be done with the problem. I Implementation, i.e. where all the calculations are made. C Control, i.e.

C Control, i.e. a test of the result. This is an ideal form of a general procedure of solution.

  • This paper descrlbes how meanings are represented in a semantic grammar for a fragment of English in the logic programming language Prolog. The conventions of Definite Clause Grammars are used. Previous work on DCGs with a semantic component has used essentially first-order formulas for representing meanings. The system described here uses formulas of the typed ~-calculus.

  • Chapter 2 λ Calculus The λ (lambda) calculus [7] created by Church and Kleene in the 1930’s is at the heart of functional programming languages. We will use it as a foundation for sequential computation. The λ calculus is Turing-complete, that is, any computable function can be expressed and evaluated using the calculus. The λ calculus is useful to study programming language concepts because of its high level of abstraction. In the following sections, we will motivate the λ calculus and introduce its syntax and semantics (Section 2.
